The Stone/Teatar Apsurda/Mizantropean Records/2017 CD Review

Serbia's  The  Stone  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  more  of  a  dark  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Teatar  Apsurda"  which  was  released  by  Mizantropean  Records.

A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  deep  black  metal  screams  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  as  well  as  some  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  acoustic  guitars,  melodic  chants  and  atmospheric  synths  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

On  this  recording  The  Stone  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  dark,  atmospheric,  raw  and  melodic  sounding,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Serbian  and  cover  nihilism,  death  and  misanthropy  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Stone  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dark,  raw,  melodic  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Gavranovo"  "Nuklearan"  and  "Teatar Apsurda".  8  out  of  10.

A  very  depressive  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  demo  along  with  some  suicidal  style  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

One  of  the  tracks  is  long  and  epic  in  length  while  Gregorian  chants  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well a s  a  brief  use  of  rain  sounds,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  a  few  tracks  and  a  couple  of  songs  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  clear  vocals,  spoken  word  parts  and  synths.

Ecos  Postumos  creates  another  recording  that  continues  the  suicidal  and  depressive  approach  to black  metal  from  his  previous  demo,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Portuguese  and  cover  suicidal  and  depressive  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ecos  Postumos  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  suicidal  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hopocristia"  and  "Borderline".  8  out  of  10.

Sacrilegious Rite Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Actually we are restructuring the band. Renewing the line up to make it ready for events to come. After the album we played a lot of gigs and composed new material. Which is ging to be released in 2018.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

The sound differs a lot regarding earlier releases. I took the time and energy to work myself into recording matters and produced it all by myself. We got it mastered from by the “Eiszeit studio” in Saarbrücken what turned out to be a good decision.

3.Your lyrics cover some satanic and occult topics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

The dark arts cover most areas of my human existence. The goal is to discover magic and astral forces in every life situation. All can be mastered by willing to give in and being conscious about your weak and mortal shell.

I’ve been a member in two covens which names I don’t want to mention here. But as it is in mundane life it turned out to be nothing for me. The rogue and solitude way is the most promising. Never let other individuals decide and rule your decision and workings. No book on this earth contains the ultimate knowledge or truth. Only through your mastery and experience and for sure only through lucifer himself one is able to reach it all.....
and.... Memento mori! Consider that your shell is not constant! Spiritual death and the insight of it brings you further.

4.The band was formed after the break up of 'Capitas Damnare', is this band a continuation of the previous band?

It was called “Capitis Damnare”.... the band started with the same line up instead of the drummer but is renewing itself permanently. You know.... people get older and lazier.... hardly anyone is willing to invest time and energy to evolve and grow. That should be a rule number one when your band proclaims a luciferian doctrine of becoming!
Capitis Damnare was active from 1999-2010 and Sacrilegious Rite from that on. The music evolved and we went to our roots by finding Sacrilegious Rite. It went back from that kind of typical black metal to more old school Black Death metal. As youngsters we started out with thrash, death stuff. At that time there was only extreme metal.... there was no “label thinking”like it is today.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Sacrilegious Rite'?

Sacrilegious Rite is like the name says a sacrilege towards the mundane world and life most of mankind lives. It inverts morality, mortality and the religion of the false light. For me it’s the crusade which I have to follow... a lot of people can’t understand that music can be more than just music. That man can be more than just man and even that death can be more than death. Kill your ego which makes you weak and follow the crusade..... that should be the only true agenda of a performing artist and musician. No exceptions and no compromise.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We played a lot of shows... I’m not sure I remember all.... I think the best shows we played at the beginning and short after the finding of the band. We where younger and we found better more motivated musicians to join in.

Our stage performance is quiet simple and more natural. We don’t perform any rituals on stage. That’s a fucking trend nowadays.... we just use blood sometimes and besides we are just ourselves. We also don’t paint our faces..... we are not faceless!

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Yes, there are some events and touring planned but it would be too early to talk about it. A lot can change in this fast lived existence.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

The feedback from South America and Asia was the best! As we have some old school Brazilian influences the South American guys have always been more into our music than the Europeans. Europe is more trend orientated and the market there changes permanently while we have been on our cause without changing much. For sure we never changed the concept.

9.You have also been a part of a few splits, can you tell us a little bit more about the bands you have shared these recordings with?

Oh yes, our first recordings are to find in the first two splits....with German gods Ungod and Bolivian desecrators of Bestial Holocaust. Sonia sepulchre and me are still allies and she performs on our recordings ever since. Even on the following.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

As it seems now we are freeing ourselves from all elements in whatever way which hinder us giving one hundred percent. It’s important for a band to evolve and to grow and sometimes even members miss it to do the next step.

We got more technical and our songwriting is ore advanced but as always the concept remains the same.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

That’s a question... I’d say we are pretty much influenced by all black/death/thrash stuff.... say: Sarcofago, old Mayhem, Hellhammer and Grotesque. Just to name a few.

Today is listen to merely the same stuff more or less.... there are some great new discoveries from time to time.

I got sick of all that Blasphemy clones, lately. Bad tongues say we would be another one of them but we’ve never been influenced by Blasphemy. I like that band but as you can listen by yourself that our songwriting is pretty much structured.... only a fucking idiot with no clue at all would draw parallels to Blasphemy. I guess most people draw that lines automatically when they see a band labelled “black/death metal”. For us.... we combine the technical structures with the darkness of black metal. We play both! If you ask me .... I would label us as “old school Death Metal” because we are influenced by times when death metal was still dark and satanic and not dealing with topics like politics and gore! You know? But fuck all that.... we just play our stuff.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I thank you a lot in your interest in Sacrilegious Rite! It’s good to deal with fanzines who also concentrate on the the religious and idealistic part of a band instead of the music only. I appreciate that. I think it’s important to see both sides of the coin! All hails and fortune for your future work!

All Hails lucifer for we are his spawn on earth!

Bass  playing  and  clean  guitars  start  off  the  album before  adding  in  heavier  riffing  and  grim  black  metal  screams  which  also  have  a  depressive  and  suicidal  edge  at  times  while  the  synths  also  bring  in  elements  of  ambient  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  faster  sections  of t he  songs  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  along with the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

The  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  demonic  growls  can  also  be  heard  while all  the  drum  beats  are  all  programmed,  when  melodic  vocals  are  used  briefly  they  bring  in  a  touch  of  goth  rock  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  clean  guitars  on  a  few  of  the  later  tracks.

Minneriket  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  his  ambient  style  of  black  metal  while  also  adding  in  a  romantic  and  gothic  touch,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Norwegian  and  English  and  cover  Paganism,  Existentialism,  and  Melancholy  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Minneriket  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "An  All  Too  Human  Heart"  "I  AM  The  Serpent  Son"  and  "Time  For  Suicide".  8  out  of  10.

Exterior Palnet Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Exterior Palnet started on December the 5th 2015. when Vladić and I had our first rehearsal. After that rehearsal we had the first 9 minutes of album done. It was basically his riffs that we rearranged a bit and gave them new aesthetics since he's primarily a drummer and had them recorded pretty raw. Our goal was to blend my guitar-oriented pieces with some more basic, classical black metal stuff, while maintaining the flow of record which ended up as one 32 minute song. We didn't cut it to pieces until the mastering. We continued with rehearsals throughout the December and January, and the basic skeleton of 'Dorsia' was done sometime in February 2016. I met Hrastovec on some random gig sometime in January 2016. I think, and soon he joined on vocals. We started recording in April 2016, when we recorded drums. Recording sessions ended around January 2017. and then came the mixing process which turned out to be one of the crucial things about the record since Rao Brlečić sprayed his magic all over it and launched it into some other spheres. Mastering was done in Portland, Oregon by Brad Boatright in Audiosiege studio and on December the 17th 2017. 'Dorsia' was ready for launching.

2.Recently you have rleeased your first album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

It's our innitial take on black metal representing the 32 minute evolution from pretty basic and raw beginning to a bit detailed and layered parts in other half which will be continued from that point on our next record we're currently working on.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores wirh the music?

Hrastovec says 'Lyrics follow a path of individuals afterlife. In first three chapters individual cannot leave its human shell after death (killed in occult ritual), as his concious still floats right beside him after burial. He is eagar to transcend to afterlife but instead gets trapped in cosmic void (IV, V, VI,VII).

Esoteric mysticism developed in form of narrative poetry, inspired by sci-fi culture.'

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Exterior Palnet'?

It's mainly inspired by our producer Rao Brlečić and croatian singer/songwriter Mladen Grdović. If there wasn't for that duo, there probably wouldn't be Exterior Palnet. I'm surprised some think 'Palnet' is not on purpose, I'm always overrating humans. Anyhow, it's kind of a long story if you don't know the circumstances, I don't think anyone wants to read that.

5.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Currently, no. At some point I would definitely like to do at least one-off show where we would play Dorsia in full, and we'll have to wait to see when will the right circumstances come. Our primary focus at this moment is working on sophomore album, and trying to release it in 2018 or early 2019.

6.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Few days after the digital release we were contacted by a certain Russian label and I'm glad to say we reached an agreement, Dorsia will soon be out on CD.

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

It's been mostly positive feedback, but whatever.

8.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that the drummer is a part of, and alsoare any of the other band members involved with any other musical projects?

As far as I know, Celephais is a thing of past for quite some time, while Pogavranjen has just awakened and heading in a new direction with Niko Potočnjak and some other Seven That Spells members. He's also in other 3 or 4 bands, we'll see if anything good comes from that. Hrastovec is currently busy with noise/grind project Bagmans and probably many others that I'm failing to keep track on. I've recently released debut album with Deuel (with Vladić also playing there), while ThroaTTwisteR is gearing up with new drummer after Nikola Pešut moved to Ireland.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Our starting point will be blending Deathspell Omega and Liturgy influences with the atmosphere of 'The Void' album by The Flying Luttenbachers, which is really something special. That said, final product will probably sound completely different, but we like to think it's our direction. We'll see where it goes from there.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I've recently discovered 'Screams and Whispers' album by Anacrusis which blew me away, so I'm diving into their discography a bit more. I couldn't believe how underrated they are. Other than that I'm going all the way from Aphex Twin beginnings to Muse or Vektor, which is orgasming my ears with their debut at the moment. Regarding the other guys in band, I'd say our main influences are Krallice, Emperor, Liturgy, Gorguts, Deathspell Omega, Wolves In The Throne Room, Vektor and all that good stuff.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

No... we're basically not doing that other stuff. It's taking me 5 minutes to remember something, which probably means there isn't anything.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I've always wanted to touch Mikael Åkerfeldt's hair.

Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  second  track  which  also  continues  the  dark  blues  style  of  the  first  song  as  well  as  keeping  the  black  metal  elements  around  and  both  of  the  tracks  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.

The  Parasite  Paradise  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  dark  blues  and  satanic  black  metal  mixture  of  the  previous  demo,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  satanism  and  occultism  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Parasite  Paradise  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dark  blues  and  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  single.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "His  Only  Begotten  Son".  8  out  of  10.

Exterior Palnet/Dorsia/2017 Full Length Review

Exterior  Palnet  are  a  band  from  Croatia  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  album  "Dorsia".

Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  elements  of  post  rock  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  musical  direction while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  hateful  black  metal  screams.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  a  great  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  acoustic  guitars  also  make  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  and  on  some  songs  the  music  also  brings  in  progressive  and  experimental  elements.

Exterior  Palnet  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  while  the  post,  progressive  and  experimental  elements  makes  the  music  stand  out  a  lot  more,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  science  fiction  themes.

In  my  opinion  Exterior  Palnet  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "II"  "IV"  and  "VII".  8  out  of  10.

Kuoleman Galleria Interview

1. For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Kuoleman Galleria was founded 2012. The first steps were slow because for the first two years the concept was almost only in my head. I made couple of demo songs during 2012-2014 and recorded them in my home studio. In 2014 I told about this project to my musician friends and we decided to form a band. We made couple of songs more and in 2015 we decided to go to an actual studio to record the debut album.

2. So far you have released 2 albums, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings and also how do they differ from each other?

Basically the first album is a compilation of demo songs. This second album we just released has been composed in shorter time and the songs are more connected to each other. And also there are more layers in it. The sound is “bigger” although we wanted to maintain the certain roughness in the music. And we used more time to pre-production phase which affected mainly on arrangements. If we talk about lyrics, this second album is much darker than the first one.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

There is kind of a background story on the new album. The journey starts from the point when autumn leaves fall to the ground and darkness descends over north (Pimeys Saapuu Pohjoiseen). Then there are songs telling stories of fucked up people (Hännystelijät Helvettiin, Nuorallatanssija, Vahtikoira), material obsession (Materian Omistama), mortality and longing for death (Ajan Hammas, Jalopuinen Makuupaikka), inner demons (Sadattaja, Piru on Irti, Mieleen Haudattu), greed (Antava Osapuoli), oblivion (Vainajan Virsi) and really bad hangover and alcohol madness (Täsmäisku, Kurjuuden Kierteessä).

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kuoleman Galleria'?

In English it means Gallery of Death. Basically the name reflects the shadow of death that’s hanging upon us all. Human beings are the gallery of death. We live for a brief moment. Then we die. End of story.

5. Originally the band started out as a solo project, what was the decision behind hiring a full line up?

My previous band Ruinside was still very active during 2012-2015 and I had simply no time to push Kuoleman Galleria forward back then. But couple of my old friends were excited about this project and we decided to make the debut album as a band. The first album was more like solo album though. This second one was made with the band and Matinlompolo who plays guitar contributed in composing.

6. What are some of the best sows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

For me four best shows have been Bar Bäkkäri in Helsinki (November 2016), 3Ushi in Sofia (April 2017), Rockstar’s in Tallinn (November 2017) and Bar Rock Bear in Vantaa (November 2017). All these shows have been turning points somehow and after these shows I have understood where we are going and what we are capable to do. Of course if you ask some other band member they could answer differently. I think Kuoleman Galleria’s stage performance could be described with words dirty, angry and mad but with a pinch of very very dark humor. But that side is hidden in lyrics so I think it will not show outside so much.

7. Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

We just made couple of shows to promote our new album in Baltic countries and in Finland. And of course we are looking for more gigs constantly. Nothing confirmed yet though. If you want to see Kuoleman Galleria, we are open for suggestions. Just ask and also tell your local clubs that you want to see our show.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal and black'n'roll?

We have been saying all the time that we are not black metal, because we don’t share the lyrical themes and the outfit that people usually think black metal bands should have. But we thought that black’n’roll is the nearest term that we could use to describe our music. But in songs we have influences from thrash metal, pagan metal, death metal and even rock music. Only the vocals sounds like black metal but we also use clean vocals in some songs, so it’s not that simple. I have said this to people who try to put us in a box: listen our albums and if you like them, good, if you don’t like them, you don’t have to listen them. We are not trying to be any specific genre… we just do music that we enjoy to play.

9. Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

Our drummer plays currently in a thrash metal band called Neferion. And my former band Ruinside was never really buried. It’s just in a deep ice. I don’t see problem with these as long as everyone has the same goals.

10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Too early to say. I have written lyrics already for the third album but the musical side is still in process. Normally the musical direction will be found after couple of first songs have been composed.

11. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Those artists are numerous. It varies time to time. Back in the days I have listened lot of melodic death metal (old In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Edge of Sanity, Arch Enemy, At The Gates, Hypocrisy, My Dying Bride, Amon Amarth), symphonic black metal (Covenant, Samael, Agathodaimon, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Satyricon, Old Man’s Child, Rotting Christ, Behemoth, Shining, Watain), some thrash metal bands (Sodom, Anthrax, Megadeth, old Metallica, old Sepultura, Kreator, Machine Head, Testament, Rage), and then Finnish bands like Ajattara, Amorphis, Barathrum, Diablo, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Finntroll, Insomnium, Kalmah, Korpiklaani, Kuolemanlaakso, Moonsorrow, Mokoma, Sentenced, Swallow The Sun, Turisas and of course hundreds of smaller bands.

12. What are some of your non musical interests?

Movies and series. The darker the better. And if there is good music involved, it’s even better.

13. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Buy albums and go to see the gigs. I’m not against streaming but I still buy the albums I like. Streaming is a good  way to discover new bands though.

Neverending Winter Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Ivan: Hi there! Band takes its roots from local DIY community. We started playing together at 2010 after disbanding of local punk/hardcore act each current member were involved in. During the years of being parts of different acts, we collected the best from both metal music and punk ideas and decided to form a band that sounds dark, melancholic, atmospheric and at the same time somehow unique by adding the traditional folk (folkish) elements to the music leaving the lyrics mostly inspired by left ideas.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?
Ivan: It is a bit hard to sum up and a find a common feature amongst each our record, especially as a member of the band. As the fan of old-styled black metal acts such as Emperor, Darkthrone, Ulver, Enslaved, Dissection and poisoned by the hardcore affected genres and subgenres like Amebix, Tragedy, Ictus, Axegrinder, the structure of the songs as well as the way of composing it were changing from one album to another. At the last record, as for me, we successfully combined the frosty mood of Siberia with its innocent beauty putting all musical experience gained over the years of playing and writing music.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored over the years with their music?
Ivan: Talking back about the years spent within DIY scene that taught and raised us in a left way in different spheres of life. Therefore, it has influence on the lyric topics as well. Most of the songs are written in Russian despite the fact that I am able to write English ones I prefer doing in native language, as I like how it sounds in whole mix. From song to song, I tried to put some archaic words to give some extra food for thought of native speakers as not anyone are aware of existence of such old and no longer used words. Lyrics are small stories or narratives where the despair rules the mind, the greed kills and frosts the people’ hearts in here and the desire to live amongst the embraces of long and frigid winters and winds. Some English translations are available via our bandcamp, feel free to check it.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Neverending Winter'?
Ivan: The band is named after the song “Never ending winter” by Axegrinder, UK based crusty thrash metal act. The idea belongs to our former drum player, for what we thank him. At the beginning, we were not putting that much meaning to the band’s name. Later the name somehow defined our further vector and drew the direct connection between our location and music. Nothing could express our senses here as a band more that this name, isn’t it?

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Ivan: During the time we were living in Tomsk city, we were not playing that much, one in a month or so. Most shows we have had were outside our region, in neighbor Siberian cities or when we were on tour. It is hard to point out and select the most memorable gig as we toured over Russia, Belarus, Ukraine,China and Europe for the past seven years. However, let it be a last year gig in Trondheim, Norway at February 2017. The country that invented black metal hosted us in such a great way and found our music interesting at the same time. Of course, it was great experience for us and we are looking forward to play there! As for stage performance – it is dark, mesmerizing performance accompanied by both fury of cold riffing and airy acoustic melodies. Hard to describe, easy to witness.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
Ivan: For sure. We tried to set up the tour as support for the last record “Хиус” that autumn but things went not that well. Therefore, we decided to make a new three song EP called “Сеногной” and already booked the European-Belarusian-Russian tour for February of 2018. If you are somewhere around Finland,Sweden,Norway,Denmark,Germany,Poland,Belarussia or Russia – catch us there or just spread the word if you’re able to. More info soon be announced on facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/neverendingwinter

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
Ivan: In our homeland not that much fans of BM discovered our music and not that much go to the shows. Mostly, the crowd consists of punk kinds or metal-punks, as we prefer to play for such communities/groups. Talking about worldwide feedbacks – we received number of great reviews, comments and just good words about new album “Хиус” from both small and respectable print and web resources. Tell the truth, I was not even expecting to receive a half of feedbacks we did. Currently it is clear for us as a band that our music is interesting for the listeners abroad more than in our country. So let see what will be the reaction of world metal community for the upcoming record then.

8.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
Ivan: Besides composing songs and playing guitar in Neverending winter I am also taking part as a drummer in death punk/metal act called “Черное Брюхо Тарантула” (The Black Belly of Tarantula) named after Paolo Cavara movie. Musically it is like a combination of old-swedish-styled death metal met by punky trash with some black metal influences. We are currently preparing our first full-length record that is about to be released at 2018. If you are into some of the mentioned genres, you will most likely enjoy the album.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Ivan: Looking back to each year spent on playing in a band I still could not exactly tell where we were going from one record to another. There is always some organic flow inside the music, something that moves it to the higher ranges, that opens new horizons of atmosphere that could be added into the songs, there is always something inside each member involved in the process that transforms the music to a new, previously unknown form. For example, on a new record there’s a track in vein of punk/d-beat that then transforms into furious mid-tempo raging classis black metal and at the same time there’s 10 minute long progressive black metal song full of different riffs that closer to its end takes the shape of an acoustic outro with some ethnic/folk elements. Summing up all these I could hardly define the further direction as it goes organically itself.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Ivan: Nowadays I am opening to myself more and more different artists of different genres. I like to listen to the old jazz and funk, not against of some trip hop, indie or ethnic music at all but of course, heavy stuff still takes place in playlist. As I mentioned I was grown up by Scandinavian metal school and some classical US and UK metal and rock acts, as well as many others in heavy scene. If talking about metal, for now, I could recommend to check Lake of blood (US band that is disbanded now), Drudkh (hails from Ukraine, the best one that ever come out of CIS countries), Elfsgedroch (experimental and very progressive Dutch metal act, highly recommended). If you look for something ethnically inspired and local Siberian Huun-Huur-Tu or Yat-Kha – these both tuvinian bands worth checking. I was born and raised between Tuva and Khakassia republics so I believe I had an influence on me that came from these cultures.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Ivan: In ordinary life, I do some IT, so it takes from time to time when I am free of work, also try to read and find inspiration in classic literature, our nature and landscapes, try to spend more time with my family and friends try not to get depressed if I am not doing or busy by anything.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Ivan: Not that much. We are living in new dark ages, in the digital modern age where the same institutional schemes of social control are used. What left for us is to stay honest and opened for our friends and ourselves, remain open-minded and try to change not the world but at least yourself to a better side. Finally – As a patriot of Siberia, I recommend everyone who is looking for a unique place to visit – do not hesitate and choose Siberian lands, believe me, you will not regret.

Myrholt Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Myrholt is simply a continuation of stuff I've been doing off and on since around 92'. It's rooted in the early so called second wave of black metal. It all began when I was 14 years old and Darkthrone released the milestone album called ''A Blaze in the Northern Sky''. From that moment on I was possessed. I was introduced to Burzum around the same time by my stepbrother. The insanity of it all just amazed me. I guess Myrholt reflects that.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?

I aimed for an organic and honest sound and I believe it has that coldness that I find essential in Black Metal. I guess it sounds the way I want Black Metal to sound.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with the music?

The lyrics are very personal. They mostly deal with the search for a better life and a better way to live it. There are many references to ancient scandinavian lifecodes and I guess one could suggest it romanticizes being self-sufficient in both mind and material. You kids should focus a little less on Playstation and a little more on nature.

4.The musical project has been around on and off since 1992, has there also been music recorded and released in the other versions of the project?

Yes indeed. Some of the early material was spread through tapetrading back in the days. I won't suggest that any of the first recordings sounded even slightly good but it was hinting at something decent I believe. I used several names during those first years. Deceased, Tyrant, Eternal Eclipse, Acron and Celestial Evil was among the first ones. I was so young then. There were new ideas every day. I even flirted with Tlohrym, which is Myrholt spelled backwards. So I guess one could say it has come full circle now. I did several recording sessions that was never distributed under the ''I Was Flesh Once'' banner. Slightly inspired by Clive Barker on that one. I even planned and recorded an album with that tag but changed the name of the project in the last minute to Tremor. The Tremor album was released in 2007 I think. I also did an EP under the Tremor banner called ''The Lipsynced with Satan EP''. The Myrholt album ''The Poe Sessions'' was originally the swansong release of Tremor. It was released in 2011 with a slightly different tracklist. The rest of the songs on that album will be released as an EP in 2018, rerecorded along with some cover tracks. It will be called ''Moerketid''.

5.You have had plenty of name changes over the years, can you tell us a little bit more about the name changes and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Myrholt'?

The namechanges was a result of an overactive creativity I think. One thought just cloaked the other. Myrholt is my family name and it is also the name of the farm where my grandfather grew up. Since it is my surname I guess it reflects the fact that this a one man band and that these are all my thoughts and that it reflects my life.

6.In 2017 alone you have recorded and released a great amount of music, do you spend a great amount of your type writing and creating music?

I always create. I have so much material that has never been released. I had some years where I was occupied playing in different bands and collaborating with different people in different subgenres of metal. This, I think resulted in me not being focused on my own stuff. I wrote and recorded regularly but never found the time to promote it.

7.All of the music is recorded by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

I have worked and still work with other musicians even though I've become somewhat eccentric when it comes to both writing and recording music. I'd rather do everything myself these days.

On the creative side I wrote the lyrics and sang in bands like Archon and Enslavement of Beauty and I've done drums for bands like Diabolical Breed and Gaia Epicus. The latter also kept me occupied traveling and gigging for some years.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

I'm happily unsigned as of now. There's been some offers concerning physical releases. There will be a limited tape release in January of ''Med Samme Naal, Under Samme Maane'' on the Norwegian label Snake Oil Kassettforlag. More will follow but nothing I can reveal at this point.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

The feedback so far has been very good. I started releasing as Myrholt in February so this ''project'' is less than a year old as a brand. This album is the first one I put a little effort in promoting.

Obviously a good move.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects that you are a part of these days?

Well. Enslavement of Beauty is permanently put to sleep so I have been working on a spin off project called OAMP or the Ole Alexander Myrholt Project. We participated on a metal tribute to the Swedish pop band Roxette earlier this year. I'm working on some stuff these days and there will be a couple of singles I think and then an album sometime in 2018.

There's some new stuff going on with my death metal band Those Left Behind. We just released a split tape with another Norwegian death metal act called Faustian Dripfeed. Some copies left for those interested.

I'm also occupied working with lyrics and vocals on the debut of a band called The Flame Within with Lasse from the Norwegian prog metal band Oceans of Time.

Baard Kolstad of Borknagar etc plays drums on that one.

The first single will be released next year.

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?

I guess I'll continue living a quiet life in the outskirts of the city, writing, participating, recording and releasing different forms of music.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I grew up listening to AC/DC, W.A.S.P and such and continued the path via Metallica etc, through death metal and then came Norwegian Black Metal. The bands that influenced the stuff I do in Myrholt would be, among others, Burzum, Darkthrone, Gehenna and to some extent early Ulver.

I just wrapped up my 2017 Spotify year and it seems Wardruna, Nettlecarrier, Djevel, Burzum and Napalm Death was my most played bands.

13.Does Paganism play any role in your music?

Not paganism essentially. But I guess several religious institutions would easily label my thoughts as pagan. I simply glorify a way of thinking that was primary prior to christendom in Norway.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Strive to be self-sufficient and rebel against organized religion. Live, love and create.
