Kroda/Selbswelt/Purity Through Fire/2018 CD Review

Kroda  are  a  band  from  Ukraine  that  plays  a  pagan  form  of  black  metal  with  some  elements  of  folk  music  and  this  is  a  review  of t heir  2018  album  "Selbswelt"  which  was  released  by  Purity  Through  Fire.

A  very  epic  keyboard  intro  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  while the  music  also  gets  very  ritualistic  at  times before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  along  with  a  great  amount  of  melody.

A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  keyboards  also  being  mixed  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion.

Nature  sounds  along  with  some  atmospheric  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction  while  also  introducing  grim  black  metal  screams  onto  the  recording  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  using  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Melodic  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  good  portion  of  the  tracks  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  you  can  also  hear  a great  amount  of  melody  in  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  as  well  as  the  music  also  bringing  in  a  lot  of  90's  influences  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief use  of  folk  elements  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  synths  are  added  onto  the  outro.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  guitar  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  long and  epic  in  length  and  also  stick  to  a  slower  direction  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  used  briefly,  acoustic  guitars  and  clean  vocals  are  also  added  onto  the  closing  track.

Melan Selas Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Melan Selas is a musical project consisted of two members, D.K., also member of Riffobia and Astraea, member of Oletir. We started in the middle of 2015 at Trikala, Greece. All music is from D.K. and vocals and lyrics from Astraea. The first project's work was released as an E.P. by Metal Throne Productions on April of 2016.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that has been presented on the recordings you have released so far?

Melan Selas' music genre is defined as black metal with epic and atmospheric elements, as well as some thrash metal ones.

3.The main member also has a background in thrash, how would you compare black metal to the other style that you play in your full time band?

There is no reason for any comparison between the two genres. It is about the expression of different feelings and musical ideas that exist in an individual.

4.Your lyrics cover a lot of Greek Mythology, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic and also are you interested in the mythologies of other cultures?

The lyrical themes of the project vary between nature, ancient times and generally philosophy. Greek mythology is not the main theme of our lyrical content. However, there are some references to this concerning the topics we metioned. We are of course fascinated with all kind of ancient mythologies. Greek mythology speaks more to us due to our connection with it.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the compilation album you have coming out?

The cover of this release illustates the logo of Melan Selas, that also stands as a symbol. The geometry of it expresses the meaning of the project's name. The black colour in the background is related to darkness and void.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Melan Selas'?

The name of the project was an idea of Astraea's father. He thought that it suits the music we present. We familiarised it because we realised that it also has a more esoteric meaning in relation with the lyrics of the project. “Melan” means “black” and “selas” means “light” in ancient greek language. The name expresses a contradiction between the dark and the light, the negative element and the positive one. These two opposite forces become one as annihilation and salvation appear at the same time.

7.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, would you be open to expanding the line up for live shows or do you prefer to remain a studio project?

We would surely want to be able to play live with a full line up but this is an ambition for which we cannot be certain at this time.

8.The compilation is coming out on 'Iron Bonehead Productions', how would you compare working with them  to your older label 'Metal Throne Productions'?

It is surely great to work with a label such as “Iron Bonehead Productions”. We are also glad for our collaboration with “Metal Throne Productions”. We always try to give our best and improve ourselves as artists.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

We had a quite good feedback from the fans of the genre until now and we continue our work for our art to be spread even wider.

10.What is going on with 'Riffobia' these days?

Riffobia are currently working on some new stuff for their third full album release.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

This is something that only time will tell.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Our music is influenced by the classic black metal bands and generally the wider range of heavy metal music. We are listening to anything that speaks to our souls.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We thank you very much for the interview. Stay tuned for more.

Brood In Black Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

1. Brood In Black is a one-man project/2-man Duo Of Darkness, from the hollows of Kentucky. We play Raw Black Metal. We have released 2 demos thus far, Arrival Of Death,(one-man demo) and Blasfemas.(one-man & band demo). We are also getting ready to release our 3rd demo, a band re-recording of Arrival Of Death, called Second Arrival Of Death, in early May.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that has been presented on the demo's you have released so far?
2.  Raw, lo-fi, uncompromising, Black Fucking Metal!

3.Can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored with your music?

3. My lyrics usually consist of anti-Christianity themes, Demonology ,Mythology,  the Occult, Blasphemy, Death, and the darkness that revolves it, and of course, Satan. My interpretations and opinions of things as well, such as stories from the Bible or Christianity, religious mockery, Also, sometimes I write in a third-person point of view. "I" doesn't always mean myself. It's written in character form. I also write from a fable point of view, making characters, derived from demonology, mythology, and composing fables..It's whatever I feel that works with the music, as well. Writing along with music. But all in all, it mostly revolves around The Infernal One below, Satanas...

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Brood In Black'?
4. The name Brood In Black actually derived from when I started writing black metal/thrash/punk, from back in 2005. I started writing music like this, in which at that point, it was simply called The Brood. I wrote until 2007, when I finally purchased a Tascam Portastudio 4-track recorder, and started recording all of these songs that I had written by myself since 2005. And this project lasted until 2010, as it was solely a one-man project. No band, no shows, no demos released, no online presence, nothing. So with the disappointment with having this one-man project wither away, I put this project into the crypts, to never be seen again. Until years later, in 2015, I dug up the old tapes, and decided to perform necromancy on this project..In which, I decided instead of The Brood, because by this point, there were 10 other bands called that online, started writing down names. And of  course, The Brood was on there, but I wanted to make this project more dark, more black, and in hopes that this project would turn into a band, I added In Black to the end of The Brood. At that point, I imagined a full line-up band, fully cloaked, performing a ritual, like at a black mass. It just felt right, the name sent chills up my spine, in a good way. When you hear the name Brood In Black, you could almost imagine a black mass...with everyone in their ritual cloaks and robes, all in black. Hence the name Brood In Black.

5.Originally the band was a solo project, what was the decision behind expanding into a duo?
5. The decision was easy. I had always wanted to play this kind of music to a live audience, to perform live rituals to the masses. So a one-man black metal live ritual was kind of impossible, unless I were to play guitar and sing along with some previously recorded tracks, which would make the live rituals less organic. So in Winter 2016/2017, after recording numerous demos, and assembling the first demo Arrival Of Death, I decided to release it to the public, online and thru mail-order. I hadn't planned to do that, but for some reason I did, just to see if anyone would enjoy these blasphemies.. And to my surprise, it started getting some online reviews and also mail-order sales. So, after some thought, and also being asked about playing live, I reached out to Bulgor for help, which he accepted. Bulgor is a family member of mine, which we had played in a couple of punk rock bands before Brood In Black. So in Summer 2017 we started practicing, re-shaping the songs from Arrival Of Death, and also writing some new unholy opuses. And on August 16th 2017, we performed our first live ritual at Best Friend Bar in Lexington, Ky. And we've been playing ever since.

6.What are some of the best shows that you have played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
6.The best show we have played so far, would have to be the last show we just played this past week. We played last Thursday, April 26th, at Best Friend Bar, in Lexington. Was a very good show! The Lexington Metal Maniacs fucking rule! People were headbanging, throwing up the horns at us, and also requesting songs! Definitely the best show we have played to date, and one I will remember for a long time. We opened that show, opening for Wolfstar(Heavy Metal), Astralnaut(Black Metal), and Kur(Blackened Death Metal), all very good bands. And also all local Kentucky bands. As far as our stage performance the VISUAL aspect, we always wear our demon-paint, sometimes blood, and sometimes wear our cloaks onstage, complete with lit candles, bones, etc..But also, sometimes we just get onstage and play, without the decorations or cloaks .It all depends on the venue, and turnout as well.  The demonpaint always is a must for me...We are hoping to add more to our live rituals, more , more bones, more everything, to make our rituals something you will not forget, visually. To make the experience more evil, more brutal, more more more!  Our stage performance, musically, we just do what we do. Play our brand of Black Metal. We get on stage as warriors, and spew forth our blasphemies to the willing and unwilling alike. From the first note, until the last, it is a WAR.. we use our instruments as weapons, and our music as ammunition.. and the stage is our fucking field of battle.. The enemy is Christianity. The enemy is organized hypocritical religion. Opposers of Black Metal. Opposers of Brood In Black. So by the end of the battle, we are still standing. And everyone else-you're either with us or against us. And those left standing with us, we stand with Satan..

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
7. As far as future shows/tours, we have no tours planned as of yet, but would love to do a tour. Bulgor has a difficult work schedule, and is sometimes hard to work around for shows/tours. The plan is to get a replacement on these shows that Bulgor will not be able to play. It is understandable, that he has to work to pay his bills. But Brood In Black is my job. Black Metal is my work. That is why we would like to have a replacement, in case Bulgor cannot play certain shows. As far as shows coming up, our next show is May 7th, 2018, at the Highlands Tap Room, in Louisville, Kentucky, for a Metal Monday show. This will be a showcase show for us, as we will be the only act on this show. We will have an extended live ritual for this show, so we shall have something special lined up. Our next show after this, is a show currently planned for July 9th, for Al's Bar Of Lexington. If any Black Metal bands would like to play with Brood In Black on this show, or would like to book a show or tour with us or general contact, send an email to us at broodinblack@gmail.com

8.Can you tell us a little bit more about 'No Hope In Hell Records'?
8. No Hope In Hell Records was my first underground label, which had mainly punk rock bands, and noise rock/experimental bands on it. It is now defunct. R.I.P. Our main label now is Blasfemas Records, which is run by myself. . Blasfemas Records is a DIY underground Black Metal label. Brood In Black is the only band currently on this label. If any BM bands would be interested in releasing a demo or something on it, contact me. I am looking to release a handful of BM demos on the label. And also looking to do splits with Brood In Black. Looking for raw sounding Black Metal, demos, rehearsals. I don't care if you record with a boombox, or if it sounds like shit. To me, that is what the true underground is about. That is the essence of it- Releasing art by all means, even if it sounds terrible. And we do limited number releases.  Artwork and everything is hand-done. Cut, copy, paste, dub, release. It is all hands-on. No printing press. D.I.Y. or fucking die!

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
9. As far as feedback worldwide, we have had a couple of reviews of our demos from other countries. And here in the states, too. But overall, the feedback has all been positive from all over the world. Reviews have all been positive. I think I would actually be relieved to receive a negative review haha!!

10.What can ex expect musically during the future?
10. You can expect more music from Brood In Black. We have a new demo coming out next month, May 10th to be exact. It is called "Second Arrival Of Death". This is mostly a band re-recording of the first demo "Arrival Of Death", with some new songs added as well. We worked really hard to take the songs from the first demo Arrival Of Death, and re-constructed every song, so that they would have a style and feel of their own. When we are not rehearsing, I am constantly writing, and recording demos. So there shall be no shortage of music from Brood In Black.jThere are a couple of splits planned with some local Kentucky bands/projects, but until these develop further than talk, I will leave it at that.. Even long after I die, there will be Brood In Black music released for future generations...We hope to play as many shows as we can, and also hope to tour, even if just a mini-tour. We would like to spread this plague all over the world, known as Brood In Black!! Personally, I would love to just record and release as much music as I can, and play as many shows as I can. Because you never know when your time on this earth is neigh..I hope to leave behind a legacy, an impact on the underground U.S.B.M. scene, in one way or another.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
11. My influences are a very long list, as I listen to a lot of different music. When I started playing guitar,I was 14 years old. I was listening to punk rock, classic rock, grunge rock, and also Black Sabbath. So naturally, I started playing whatever I could learn, from everything from Sex Pistols "God Save The Queen", to  Nirvana, to Black Sabbath. I cut my teeth on all of that music, which it was the early to mid 90's.This was around the first time I first heard Extreme Metal, thru my friend Mike McCollum, when he popped in Slayer "Seasons Of The Abyss", and Sepultura "Beneath The Remains".  But with all metal, it will always be Black Sabbath, the kings.  But as far as Black Metal bands go, I will list the ones who are/were most  influential, in no particular order. The first Sodom demos/albums were a huge influence, everything before Persecution Mania. Not to say that I didn't love everything after that, but In The Sign Of Evil and Obsessed By Cruelty were very influential. Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Darkthrone, Von( "Satanic Blood" is my favorite demo of all time.) Beherit, Azazel, Vlad Tepes. There are more from the past, but at this point I cant remember them all! hahaha
As for current listening, I've been listening to Croc Noir, from France. Awesome French Black Metal!!  France had, and still has, a vital Black Metal scene there. Devilgroth, from Siberia, who just recently released a theme album about Ivan The Terrible, "Ivan Grozny". Very atmospheric BM. Good album. Sardonic Witchery "King Of The Midnight Legions", Awesome Black Metal from Texas. Master's Curse's new cassette, "Resurgence", Fucking brutal Occult Black Metal from Kentucky. Highly recommended.

12.How would you describe your views on Satanism and Occultism?
12. My views about Satanism are, I support Satanism, even though it is now a worldwide organized religion. I'll support that before I would support any other  Judeo-Christian religion that is on this earth. I would almost consider myself a Satanist, but then that would put me in with a group of people who are a part of a religion that involves commerce, involves "belonging" to a church/cult/religious sect.  And that would make it organized, which I do NOT support. I do not support any type of organized religion. BUT I do support their credos, which is mostly common sense things that most people should do, or already do in the first place. And that is, TO BE A DECENT FUCKING HUMAN BEING! But as far as being a part of their religion, NO I am not a Satanist. I AM SATAN. I DO NOT FOLLOW ANY SHEEP OR GODS. I FOOT MY OWN PATH. I GO MY OWN WAY. HAIL SATAN.

Occultism is something I do support. I've dabbled a little bit in the Occult, the Black Arts, etc. I don't wish to speak any further of what I have been involved with, as it is personal to me. But if people want to divulge into the Occult, I recommend it. But you have to be of sound mind, body, and spirit. It is not for everyone, especially those with weak constitutes.
I fully support Occultism, witchcraft, wicca, pagan magic, nocturnal magick, and of these things of the Unlight. Fuck these Christians who practice what they call White or Christian Magic(It is the Christians who stole the pagan witches' alchemy, formulas, etc., changed it to Christian Magic. Trust me, I know one. She thinks her magic is "pure, white magic", but she doesn't understand that it is PAGAN MAGIC that she practices, not CHRISTIAN MAGIC!) The Christians have stolen everything from Pagans, Native Americans, etc. Sorry to have gone off on a tangent..

13.Are there any other black or underground metal bands that are worth checking out in your home state of Kentucky?
13. This fucking state of Kentucky needs more Black Metal bands.. Here are a few that I am fond of..
Apochryphal Revelation, Master's Curse, Pyromancer, Astralnaut, Vox Malorum

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

14. Last words? Hails to Occult Black Metal Zine for the reviews and the interview, Infernal Hails to all of our fans, throughout the world.  If anyone wants to get in contact with Brood In Black or Blasfemas Records, send us an email to broodinblack666@gmail.com  Death to the Christian Faith! Death to the prophets of Christ! Death to the Holy Priests of God! Death to their fucking lies! Death to the opposers of Black Metal! Keep the fire alive...Evil Fucking Lives..Hail Satan 666!

Mordgier Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Hail! I formed the band in the beginning of 2002. I played in this time in a few bands but I still had some ideas which I couldn't realized with other bands. It was natural that I started a new band. Along with the guitarist with whom I played at that time in another band, we played a few rehearsals. After finding a drummer, we had only two rehersals and we played at the festival. Then we played one more rehearsal and in December 2002 we recorded a 40-minute demo in famous at this time Selani Studio. I will add that it is a full live recording.

2.How would you describe your musical sound?

Pure Fucking Black Metal! Even then, sixteen years ago, so many bands began to change their style, that already then I began to operate under the banner of "The Forgotten Ghost ov Black Metal", which has not lost its validity until today. I am not a hard-headed idealist who locked himself into the Black Metal of the early 90's, but MORDGIER was and will musically sustain the flame of the "old" Black Metal. For sure I will not record "In Deathcold Mist" part two but for sure it will be MORDGIER and Black Fucking Metal - chaotic, raw and antireligious music for real metallers.

3.On the demo you covered a lot of satanic topics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in Satanism?

I don't think there are many strictly satanic topics on the demo. Texts on "In Deathcold Mist" catch on Satanism, but there is more about suicide, death, misanthropy...

My view of the ideology of Satanism underwent a metamorphosis, which I consider to be natural in the process of gaining more and more knowledge. I listen to metal since 1993 and at first I have no interest in the subject of Satanism but I was 12 at the time, although more or less at the time I began to be interested in esotericism among others. With time, I entered the path of Satanism, Occultism and Black Magic. Studying philosophy and deep interest in various religions (I read the bible, the koran and other "holy" books - on the principle of knowing your enemy) also had a considerable impact on my philosophy of life.

I follow the Satanic way but personally, quite a long time ago I stopped calling myself a Satanist, but it does not bother me if someone calls me that. In addition, I consider myself an Antitheist. My Satanism? I try to follow my own path, in which you can certainly find elements of various varieties of Satanism, Luciferianism and various philosophical doctrines, but I don't follow blindly any of the existing varieties of Satanism, because it is as stupid to me as going to church. Being a sheep will always be a sheep, even if you will follow so-called The Left Hand Path.

4.Since 2003 there has not been any new material, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?

The reason for the silence was very simple. In the end of 2003 Krieger (drums) left the band (due to the duties in private life and the distance, he lived in other city). In 2004 further cooperation with my guitarist was not possible and the band stopped activity but never split-up. For many reasons like private life, new band and big health problems, I hadn't time for normal activity, but in this time of inactivity I created some new songs. Oficially MORDGIER is active again since January 2016.

5.Originally the band was called 'Triumphant' what was the cause of the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Mordgier'?

Yes, TRIUMPHANT was first name of my band but I change it to MORDGIER a few months later. Why? I was looking for more brutal name that would suit my band's music more. The second reason was the popularity of the name “Triumphant” in various forms. Quite by accident I found the German word “Mordgier”, which can be translated as "the lust for murder, the lust for blood."

6.Originally the band was based in Poland but now located in the United Kingdom, what was the cause of the move?

Because I moved to United Kingdom in 2015.

7.What where some of the best shows that the band had played in the past and also how would you describe your stage performance?

MORDGIER played only one concert. In December 2002, we performed in Olsztyn (Poland) at the fourth edition of the underground festival "Night ov Torment". Apart from us, there were also such bands as VESANIA, PARRICIDE, THIRD DEGREE and EFFECT MURDER. Our performance? At that time, there was no Black Metal band in Olsztyn (our city) which used tons of nails and corpse-paints, inverted crosses and blood on performances. So I think it's true if I say that as the first of the Olsztyn bands we played a full true Black Metal concert - sonic terror, nails, satanic blaspemy, corpse-paints... We played all the songs from the demo. Madness on stage, madness under the stage.

8.Are you open to doing any live shows in the future?

Yes, of course. I like to play live but concerts are not a priority for me, in the sense that they are not my focus. So you can expect concerts in future, but it's too early for details. The priority is to record EP with a few new tracks and tracks for split 7”EP with NECROSADIST (Pol).

9.On the demo you had done some 'Beherit' and 'Darkthrone' covers, what was the decision behind doing your own versions of their songs?

Why these songs? I always wanted to record my version of "The Gate of Nanna". When it comes to "Quintessence" ... till today I think it is one of the best song of Norwegians, so when we decided to record a cover of this band, the choice was simple.

10.Can you tell us a little bit more about 'Antitheus Productions'?

Antitheus Productions is a small independent label, which I am a co-owner together with Vanadis. We are focused on quality, not quantity. We do not care about release a few or a dozen releases a month, because to be honest it is not difficult these days. In addition to new releases, we are also focused on publishing old materials - forgotten, unknown or those that are worth remind. More info: www.antitheus.uk

11.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

In 2003, after the release of the demo tape and now after the re-edition, the opinions that reach me are good and very good. But even if they were negative, I would not change my music anyway. There will always be opponents and malcontents...

12.What can we expect musically from the new material once it is released?

Less faster parts, more at medium tempos. Most of the tracks that will be on the next two releases (split 7"Ep and EP) are already a few years old. What can I add? As I say before – raw, “old school” Black Metal. Lyrics? A long time ago I left the writing of anti-christian texts. If I touch on matters of religion, I do not focus on one religion, lyrics are against all organized, institutionalized religions. I still deal with the subject of suicides and death, but from a different perspective, not personal. Satanic threads are still present, but you will not find texts like "Hail Satan! Kill the christians! Fuck you!" in MORDGIER!

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

During the creation of "In Deathcold Mist" I was heavily influenced by "Kronet til Konge" DODHEIMSGARD, "Destroyer" and "Incipit Satan" of GORGOROTH, early CARPATHIAN FOREST and “old” BURZUM. And I'm sure you can hear it on the demo (at least to some extent). Anyway, to this day I am under the influence of the above mentioned, and "Kronet til Konge" is one of the best Black Metal albums for me. What I listening nowadays? A lot of old albums and I'm totally out of date with new products. To name a few, the last few weeks I've been listening a lot of PEST „Hail the Black Metal Wolves of Belial”, THY DARKENED SHADE „Liber Lvcifer I: Khem Sedjet”, LYKAIONAS „Luciferian Fullmoon Necromancy”, LUCIFERION „Demonication” and BURZUM „Filosofem”. I like to search and listen to some less known or unknown bands, sometimes you can find a very interesting band... And I invariably listen a lot to my three best bands and the only ones I like whole (every single song) - DISSECTION, VINTERLAND and BLACK CRUCIFIXION. However, I don't think that what I am listening now has any greater impact on the music of MORDGIER

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Remember - "When Hell Calls Your Name, There Is No Way Back" ! Thanks for the interview and your support.
