Corax B.M/Spread The Occult/Pagan Records/2022 EP Review

Corax  B.M  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  plays  an  old  school  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  ep  "Spread  The  Occult"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Pagan  Records.

A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  lot  of  90's  era  Greek  and  Scandinavian  influences  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

Clear  chants  and  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Whispered  vocals  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  the  raw  energy  of  punk  rock  at  times  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

Corax  B.C  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  as  well  as  mixing  the  Scandinavian  and  Hellenic  styles  of  the  genre  with  a  touch  of  punk  rock  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Corax  B.C  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  black  metal  band  with  a  touch  of  punk  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Bewitched'  and "Paraora".  8  out  of  10.

Indren/Of Time And Autumn Leaves/Naturmacht Productions/2022 Full Length Review

Indren  are  a  musical  project  from  Italy  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Of  Time  And  Autumn  leaves"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

Synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  lot  of  blast  beats.

Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  tremolo  picking  also  giving  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

The  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  along  with  one  of  the  tracks  also  introducing  melodic  vocals  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  transition  of  autumnal  nature  into  winter.

In  my  opinion  Indren  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Of  Time"  and  "Nebbie".  8 out  of  10.

Lunar Chalice/Trascendentia: The Shadow Pilgrimage/Iron Bonehead Productions/2022 CD Review

Lunar  Chalice  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  occult  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Trascendentia:  The  Shadow  Pilgrimage"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Iron  Bonehead  Productions.

A  very  dark  and  ritualistic  synth  oriented  intro  starts  off  the  album  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also b e  heard  briefly  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  along  with  the  vocals  also  being  done  in  a  clean  style  bordering  on  Gregorian  chants.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  melodies  are  also  added  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  Grim  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  synths  also  returning  on  some  of  the  later  tracks.

Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  songs  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  modern  and  old  school  influences  as  well  as  the  guitar  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized  and  the  album  closes  with  a  classical  guitar  track.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Heresy  and  Witchcraft  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Lunar  Chalice  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Calix  Cum  Velum"  "and  "The  Astral  Stargate".  8  out  of  10.

NekroChaparro Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

NekroChaparrO is a Trve Transtejanian Communist Black Metal band, formed in 2020 as a one man band by Lord Chaparraeth and since the start of thus year it became duo with Matter Chaparrum S. joining to play bass/guitar. We try to play what we want to play and not get too attached to a specific style of Black Metal as long as it's "krieg" or "kvlt" or whatever you wanna call it, in our eyes.

2.So far this year you have released 2 full lengths and a single, musically how do they differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

We released "nekrochaparrum" which was an experimental thing I (LC) did, it's much more atmospherical and kinda removed from the rest of the things NekroChaparrO has released before.

Then we released "..thus ends the age of man.." that is a single for the full album coming out on June 6th this year, where you can see what MC S. brings to the band and how we are evolving and discovering better ways of making music.

The EP you reviewed, "Hell's Hammer and the Satanic Sickle" was based on a couple of songs I had written lyrics too and while rehearsing we tried them on and enjoyed what came out so we recorded and released it.

3.A lot of your lyrics cover satanic themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

Both of us have been into the "dark stuff" for many years, mostly because of music and literature, but the main reason for the satanic stuff in NekroChaparrO is that it felt right. As I (LC) have read a lot about it and listened to a lot of Black Metal it kinda came naturally when I began writing lyrics, and it became part of the image of the band almost by chance.

4.A lot of your lyrics cover communism and Marxism, can you tell us a little bit more about these views and also how do they mix in with your stanic beliefs since those philoisophies tend to be more on the atheistic side?

Well, both of us identify as communists and follow the ideals behind it, and we don't really see a contradiction between the normal atheism in communism and the satanic beliefs. The latter says that you should do what you want and what's best for you, but as communists what's better for me is also what's better for all. Satanism tells us that you must fight against the established order by yourself if you have to and live as you wish to live and communism has always been a fighting ideology, especially in this times of single-minded neo-Liberal thought, both communism and satanism are voices of rebellion and that's the main reason we feel they fit together pretty well.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'NekroChaparro'?

A chaparro is a kind of oak tree that is emblematic in the Alentejo, a traditionally rural, agricultural and communist region of Portugal. The name and the idea behind the band came when I was in a (now unfortunately extinct) metal festival in Alentejo, SMSF, and the thought of having an Alentejo themed black metal band came with the name, Nekro because it's such a stereotypical "dark" metal name and Chaparro to represent the Alentejo. You can see a Chaparro both on our logo and on the cover of "Transtejanian Hunger" the very first release by NekroChaparrO.

6.Since 2020 you have released a great amount of material, do you spend a great amount of your time writing and creating music?

Back in 2013 when the idea for the band formed I started writing some lyrics and through the years I'd have an idea and wrote it down, always thinking that one day I might find people who would like to play and form a band. Eventually during the first major confinement, watching MC S. working on her stuff (that I'll talk a bit about on another answer) I saw that with this new technologies I could actually create the music I always wanted to make : some raw, DIY, black metal, for myself and did the first EP with some of the lyrics from before. I enjoyed the process and working from home found myself with both time, means and motivation to do more.

I'm not always writing but I do anyways have somewhere where to write down a idea or sometime even a word, and I'll eventually go back to it and turn it into a lyric.

Now, with MC S. on the band what happens is that I have an idea, write something and then program the drums and when we go to rehearse I tell her what my ideas are on what the music should be like and then she tries on some riffs until we both like one that fits, record it and I finish the song with vocals.

7.Both of the band members are also in other bands, what is it that you bring into the music of 'NekroChaparro' that you are not able to do with your other groups?

NekroChaparrO by it's own definition is somewhat limited lyrically and musically but at the same time it has a freedom that comes from not taking ourselves too seriously and that allows us to do really heavy, dark, and sometimes silly, stuff. For example in "the lord Satan is my shepherd and I will dwell in His house forever", the next album, we'll have a song inspired by a church song, but turned on its head.

8.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

For writing stuff we will probably keep being just the two of us, living together means that

we can, at any time we are home just to pick up the instruments and do something if we have an idea we wish to try. But both of us are interested in doing some live shows eventually, and for that we'd need more musicians. We have some interest from some friends but nothing solid yet.

9.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We've received a few offers but never anything that felt like it was worthy of abandoning the freedom of doing our own stuff by ourselves or that didn't feel like a rip-off. If someone with a label and a real interest in our stuff shows up and invites usnwe aren't against it on principle, especially if it's a small underground label. The main benefit of it would be to release some physical albums and promotion.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

I've had very mixed reactions, but in general if someone takes the time to react it's positively. The biggest two things were The Psyfrost youtube channel ( https://youtube.com/channel/UCHGAFhGWVWMDG-HtbgbrPkw) reachin out to us because he wanted to post some of our stuff in his page that started last year and became a regular collaboration where he always posts what we release and the other, that I actually found out the next day, was the inclusion of one of our songs on a communist metal compilation last year (https://youtu.be/hv_Uncz6mlo). And of course, your review and interview!

11.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

I, LC, have Ar-Minuluzir ( https://arminuluzir.bandcamp.com ) that is a Tolkien inspired experimental/atmospheric black metal that was an idea I had and that didn't fit with what I was doing in NekroChaparrO. It's a project that for now is on hold, until I have something else that makes sense with the "brand". Then there's nxpr ( https://nxpr-noise.bandcamp.com/ ) , a harsh/noise/cave-like metal thing where I try different stuff. This one is always on, and I'm working on a few things for it, soon.

MC S. has her own spoken word poetry project ( https://mcsantiago.bandcamp.com/ ) that has been a bit more on hold because she has been focusing on learning the bass guitar but not forgotten. At the moment she is learning and evolving to release something heavier and darker soon.

12.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Where ever we want to go! We have some.. non-traditional ideas to play around with, from a sci-fi concept album to a more heavy/power inspired black metal songs, and there's always the more traditional black metal toybox to play it. We both really enjoyed making the punk-inspired Brigada Anti-Facho song so there might be more of that kind of sound in the future!

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

From the start there's two strong influences in terms of approach to metal, both Portuguese bands : Alcoholocaust for the boose and party and Filii Nigrantium Infernalium for the style and approach. Besides that there's the mandatory 90s second wave things and also a bit of everything that feels like it would fit.

As for what we are listening to.. I listen to a lot of stuff in the background, mostly black metal lately but never exclusively, I think one should always be discovering new things and finding different ways to make metal that is dark and heavy and dirty. The last thing I discovered is actually quite old, the first album by The Black and my first dive into black metal was Limbonic Art.

As for MC S her greatest influence in the bass is of course Lemmy but also ex-Nervosa's Fernanda Lira and current-Nervosa's Mia Wallace as well. To get into the mindset to create for NekroChaparrO she's been listening to lots of black metal. Her latest discovery was the UK band Sidious and her first obsession was Wolfheart

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

First we would both like to thank you for the interview and for the kind words on the review. Besides that, we'd like to point out that everything we ever released is available for free (pay what you want) on the band's bandcamp page ( https://nekrochaparro.bandcamp.com/ ) , and that June 6th the next album comes out, it's already done just waiting for the date.

Anthrodium Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Anthrodium is black metal, and its new, but I don't want to classify it further down into the world of sub-sub genres. I want the music to speak for itself and allow the listener to draw their own conclusions. The seeds for Anthrodium were planted long ago, but it wasn’t until early 2021 (roughly a year into the pandemic) that I decided to finally put the gears into motion. Ideas about a black metal project had been thrown around for years but it needed the right fuel to start the fire. Turns out that quarantine, isolation, despair and hopelessness are extremely good kindling.

2.Recently you have released an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

Uninhibited is the word that comes to mind. While writing the songs, if I ever had a thought about “how will this be perceived?”, that thought was immediately discarded. Fuck it. I’ll write what I want to write. I want it to be dark, dissonant and uncomfortable. I want it to be ugly. During the vocal sessions, it was anything goes. We got inebriated, and the ideas flew. Most things are first takes, and there are audible mistakes. To me that just adds to the naturalness of the music. There’s nothing slick about this production. It’s raw from a production standpoint, but also raw in execution.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects that the band has explored so far with the music?

The overall inspiration behind what we’re trying to do is to convey through music our anger, frustration, contempt and hatred towards what our species as a whole is doing to ourselves, each other and our planet. The depth of horror and destruction that human beings are capable of seems to be endless. From the sociopathic behavior of one individual, to the grand horrors of modern warfare, to the increasingly evident self-imposed destruction of climate change, we might just be the most disgusting species on earth. We don’t have any message one way or another. Thats just how it is.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Anthrodium'?

“Anthro” is a prefix that refers to humans and “Odium” means intense hatred and contempt. One can deduce what we’re trying to say.

5.Who designed the logo that was presented on the ep cover?

I drew the logo myself, as I’ve done with all of my bands. A lot of logos in the extreme metal world tend to fit into certain molds. Look at any deathfest flyer and you’ll see what I mean. There are a lot of artists out there that you can pay to make you a logo. I just believe in being yourself, and doing it yourself.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

It’s going to stay the way it is. We don’t have any interest in making this a full band that plays live. We both have families, jobs. We’ve done the full time band thing and while that has it’s perks, it also comes with its share of headaches. This is just about us expressing ourselves and creating the art we want to create, when we want to create it.

7.Do any of the band members have experience playing in other bands or musical projects?

Oh yes. Tony and I played together in Scaphism from 2009-2018. I’ve continued on with that band, but when Tony left I always knew we would work on something again in the future. The timing just had to be right. As huge black metal fans, we had always wanted to do something in that genre for years, but Scaphism was always the primary focus and we just didn’t have time. When the pandemic hit in 2020 and all of Scaphism’s plans were cancelled, something needed to fill that creative and emotional void. That’s when Anthrodium was born.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We would love to have this demo, and future releases out on a label that can give us a little more reach. One can only do so much by themselves. There are a lot of great underground labels releasing scuzzy raw black metal demos. We just need to find the right fit.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Can’t really say at this point. Its totally new. The few responses and reactions that we have gotten have been mostly positive though. No one has come out and said “it sucks” yet, but I’m sure there will be people that think that. I honestly don’t care how it’s perceived. We love it, and we’ll continue to make more of it.

10.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We’re working on more material but the next release will probably be another demo or maybe a split. There aren’t any immediate plans for a full length. Making an album is an incredibly daunting process and can take years. I’m more interested in releasing music in a shorter form. I think a band can make a powerful musical statement in 15-20 minutes, and I’m more interested in hearing that than suffering through a 60 minute long Watain album.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I think there’s some obvious links to our style. Most listeners can probably hear the lineage from things like Burzum, Horna or Abruptum maybe, but there are other elements going on that may be more difficult to trace. We’re also hardened death metal players, so that factors in too. Its a conglomeration of all the sorts of things we listen to that are on the darker side.

My listening habits are always all over the place. I’ll crank a goregrind album with pitch-shifted vocals, then turn around and soak up some classic 50’s doo-wop. On the extreme side of things, lately I’ve been jamming bands like Invultation, Nocturnal Departure, Von, Blut Aus Nord and Throneum.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Check out our music at anthrodium.bandcamp.com and support independent music and art.

Diatribe  are  a  solo  project  from  France  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  raw  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  album  "Satyric  Eye"  which  was  released  by  Iron,  Blood  And  Death  Corporation.

Rain  and  thunder  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  One  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

On  this  recording  Diatribe  expands  on  the  raw,  modern  and  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  that  he  had  introduced  on  his  previous  release.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  mysticism  and  spiritual  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Diatribe  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Funeral  Haze"  "Next  To  The  Lamb"  "To  Face  The  Unknown"  and  "Cross The  Rubicon".  8  out  of  10.

Likheim Interview

Answered by GRETN

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Likheim is a band, or musical project, that has been on my mind for quite some time. After it became obvious that not much would happen with my old band Vargariket back in the early 2000’s I focused most of my energy on running a record label and playing in various bands. However, most of the music I made was on the darker and more aggressive side than the bands I played in and as time went on I had several hours of riffs and half-ready songs gathered across various recording devices. In winter 2021 I was invited to Hrafnheim studio to do a re-recording of an old Vargariket track and that was kind of the spark that once again lit the black flame - I realized that I had spent too much time contemplating and with that Likheim was born.

2.In May you have an EP coming out, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

I wanted something raw and unpolished but at the same time not compromising on sound quality or melodies. Even though we used modern recording devices, most of the guitars and vocals are one-take recordings because I wanted it to sound more like a live recording than a polished studio release. I think it is the unpolishedness and simplicity that gives it that eerie and atmospheric feeling. It wasn’t really planned, it just ended up sounding that way. When I went into the studio to do the vocals I had no idea how the final result would sound, but I must say I am quite happy with how it ended up sounding.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects that the band has explored so far with the music?

Nature, solitude, suicide, inner demons, occultism mixed with a tad of Norse believes, the end of everything… yeah, that probably sums it up.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Likheim'?

I had a list of probably twenty band names but as I went through them they were either already taken or simply not unique enough. Likheim is comprised of the two words “Lik” meaning dead body and “heim” which can have multiple meanings such as home, farm, town etc. In my vision of the name, Likheim is a dark, forlorn castle. From the outside it may seem abandoned, but in its endless cellar halls lost souls will forever roam…

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

It is drawn by Vhan Artworks. I think it fits the lyrical themes perfectly: A lone wanderer gazing upon the unwelcoming, harsh, landscape in front of him. Maybe the mountains will seal his fate? Maybe he came there to end his life? Maybe it is a symbol of inner emptiness? Maybe he watches the final hours of the world, before all is swallowed by the sun and the world shattered to pieces?

I’ll let the listener interpret the art while they listen to the music.

6.Has the band done any live shows or is this strictly a studio project?

Currently it is only a studio project, but the plan is to gather a live band this fall and start playing some shows next year.

7.The ep is going to be released on 'Underground Kvlt Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Underground Kvlt Records is a subsidiary label of Odium Records. They are both operated by Shadow from the legendary band Black Altar, but Underground Kvlt is focusing more on less known underground acts from what I understand.

”Alt Skal Svinne Hen…” is the first release on that label and the second release will be London-based, black metal band, EIHORT and their debut album - "Consuming The Light".

8.On the ep you brought in session musicians, would you consider this band as being a solo project?

Yes, it is a solo-project but it doesn’t mean that I will do everything myself. I can play the guitar fairly well and I could handle the bass too if I wanted, but it wasn’t what I wanted for this recording. I am more like the creative driving force and I always try to surround myself with musicians that are more talented than me or have talents that I don’t have. It has been a pleasure working with Gamle Erik from Carpathian Forest ( also known from Svarttjern and Aandemaner) on this recording. It was also great working with Umarlak who was able to quickly record the guitars on these songs based on my ideas.

Riff writing and vocals are my main focus, but I also lay down some guitars here and there.

Now, the plan is to gather a band and start playing some shows. Organizers; feel free to get in touch!

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

We have just started the promotion, but the feedback on the short sound clips and the music video we have spread on social media has been very good so far. Listen to the full title track here and make up your own opinion: https://youtu.be/umxmGYnBn3Q

10.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

The full-length is planned to be released on Dusktone in fall this year. The recording process is already well on its way. But we had some setbacks due to covid as well as drums being seriously delayed so I am not sure if we will be able to get it out this fall or not. With vinyl lead times of nearly a year, things must be planned well in advance these days.

Musically it will not change that much compared to the Mini-CD/EP but the songs are probably better structured and we try to make it just a tad more “polished.” Do not fret, though, this will not become some super polished album - it will still sound raw and unpolished as hell. It will be intense - That I can promise!

Beyond that, I can hardly imagine Likheim taking a drastically different turn musically in the future.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

On a personal level, my musical inspirations are anything from 50’s rock to modern black metal but one of my all time favorites is Darkthrone’s “Transylvanian Hunger.” To me, that album is the definition of black metal. I am also a huge fan of Blackie Lawless’ vocals. Except for that Darkthrone, Marduk, Tsjuder and early Mayhem are probably the main inspirations for my music; however I wouldn’t say Likheim sound like any of those. I try to soak up inspiration in many different scenarios. When your ears and mind are open, inspiration can come from many strange places.

What I listen to nowadays? Ohhh, that’s a lot. I try to listen to as much new music as I can and I am more into listening to new releases than old ones. I get bored quickly, I guess. Some bands on high rotation: 1914, Svarttjern, Watain, Perkele, Haymaker, Fjøsnisse, Uburen, Cobra Spell, Dark Funeral, Månegarm… Alright, that was just a few and quite an eclectic mix of bands, don’t you think?

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

First of all, thanks for the interview. We have some merch in the making and if you’ll support us through buying some merch that would be highly appreciated. Once available, you will find links at Likheim.com

I also strongly encourage supporting the labels and concert arrangers by buying physical products and going to concerts. Covid took a toll on a lot of arrangers and bands and it’s time to help them get back to normal operations.

Jzovce Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project ?

Jzovce was created in Summer 2019 after a tragic experience. I started writing and recording and an entire album was done in one week. After that I thought the project could be something much more than just a one shot of anger and sadness and I decided to explore new aspects of composition.

2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past ?

As the project evolves little by little I was focusing more and more on the black metal aspect of the writing and of the sound. For this new album, Kezdet, I wanted something more raw, more bleak and more "in your face", so I spent hours and hours working on the sound before the recordings and hours and hours on the mixing and mastering to give the album the energy and dynamics it deserved. I also spent more time on the arrangements and more generally on every guitar part, every drum sound, every field recording, to really have a complete, well balanced album. It is very important to take the time to work, lots of "artists" don't really take it nowadays, they just write a few riffs, shit-record them and mix everything with reverb and lo-fi eq and say "yeah this is raw black metal we are fucking true", you are a fucking imposture yes.

3.The new lyrics are based on The Blair witch project, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this film ?

Actually, the lyrics aren't based on Blair witch, I only used some samples taken from the film. This particular movie has haunted me since its release in 1999. I consider it as one the best found footage movies, and simply as one the best movie ever. Everything is right, from the characters to the filming, to the forest, the house and the witch we never see. I have seen it dozens of times and every time something new appears, something that was there since the beginning but that I've never seen before, as if the witch didn't want me to see it until now. I've read lots of books, essays and articles about the making of the film, the story, the legend of Black Hills, even a book containing all the police and journalists reports which are supposed to be true.

4.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects you have explored over the years with your music ?

With Jzovce, I am focusing on the dark, horrific and vivid conflict between man and God. I am kind of a mystical artist in some way, not a believer but I am very interested in the representations of the Gods, the hidden meanings of all of this, the secrets of the creation. The primitive aspects are what keep me going, as well as the haunted forests, the magical energy behind the rituals, the essence of witchcraft.

5.With your other musical projects you have also worked with other musical genres, do you feel this had made you a better musician ?

Absolutely. It's all about working and trying to improve myself, to go further and not being satisfied of doing the same thing in the same way. Working on different genres of music allows that improvement, it helps going away from the boundaries the music and yourself have put, then you can see things differently and reach another level of composition.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Jzovce ?

Jzovce is a no word. It doesn't have any proper meaning as I made it up. I didn't want to have a real word when I started working on the project, I wanted something intriguing but mostly something that people cannot refer themselves to. With a name with real words, you are telling people what to expect, a made up name has that unknown feeling which is much more interesting. The same goes for the tracks and albums names, some of them are totally made up.

7.With your musical projects you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians in the future ?

I am. I already did collaborations with other artists and I am doing it with Jzovce as well. A bass player has worked with me on the upcoming album (which will be released later this year), he put some different dynamics on the songs and made them a bit groovier ! Also, the talented Golem Mecanique recorded some voices and electric hurdy-gurdy for a concept album to be released in 2023.

8.How does the music of Jzovce differ from the other solo projects that you are a part of ?

The only other project I'm working on now (I've put the other projects aside and I don't think I will exhume them) is the very first one, under my own name, Thomas Bel. For this one, I used to focus on experimental, ambient and folk and the more time passes by the more it becomes doom folk, the key being to keep it raw and simple : acoustic and/or electric guitar and voice. On the other hand, Jzovce is meant to be black metal, raw and primitive. It contains lots of different elements, layers of field recordings, home made percussions, samples from films, tons of repetitive riffs and instinctive drum patterns, to create a unique and visceral atmosphere.

9.You also run Distant Voices, can you tell us a little bit more about this label ?

Distant Voices is a small record label founded in Summer 2012 to release black metal, ambient and other obscure music in very limited handmade editions. Every release is made with fine and soft papers to create unique and beautiful objects. It also features special and artist editions in extra limited quantity including more works on papers and textures, fabric, hand writting, photographs, ..., as well as editions of poetry books, art prints, t shirts and patches. Distant Voices is independent and artisanal. We do our very best to use recycled papers only.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of depressive black metal ?

Well, I don't know... I don't consider Jzovce as depressive black metal but I can understand how one can. I don't really have any contact from people who buys or listens to my music, I guess they are as isolated and unable to communicate as me haha, but the very few I met have told me great things about my music.

11.What is going on with your other musical projects these days ?

I am working on a new album which is going to be instrumental and filled with abyss. There are also some new folk songs in progress that might end up on another album. I am also trying to find some places to play, I recently did a show after 9 years off stage and it felt really nice so I decided to go on this way and play live as much as possible. Some shows are already on discuss as we speak.

12.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future ?

Hopefully I will be able to go further on all the experimentations I have started in order to become a better artist, a better person, to improve myself and my art.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays ?

Wow that is a difficult one ! There are tons of bands, artists from so many different genres who have influenced me and they still are, I won't be able to make a list... let's just say that today I mostly listen to Funeral Mist, Infernal Coil, Whispering Sons and The Devil's Trade but it's going to be very different next week haha !

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts ?

May the night be your love

Angry  shouts  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  as  well  as  the  vocals  also  adding  a  small  amount  of  tracks in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  melodic  and  ritualistic  chants  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Indian  and  Vedic  Mythology  and  Spirituality  themes.
