Kalmankantaja/Second Death/Misanthropia Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Finland's  Kalmankantaja  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Second  Death"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Mianthropia  Records.

  Melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  a  few  seconds  later.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  some  clear  singing  also  being  utilized  at  times  while  the  music  also  has  its  melancholic  and  depressive  moments  and  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  show  an  influence  of  doom  metal.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  riffs  also  ad d in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  At  times  the  music  also  goes  into  more  of  an  atmospheric  direction  A lot of the music  also shows  an  influence  of  the  90's  goth  metal  style  and  the  whole  recording  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction,  growls  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  On  this  recording  Kalmankantaja  takes  an  atmospheric  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  90's  era  gothic/doom  metal  to  create  an  album  that  is  very  different  from  their  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  solitude  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Kalmankantaja  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black,  goth  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "When  I  leave"  and  "Second  Death".  8  out  of  10.

Numeron/Road To Valhalla/Tragedy Productions/Meuse Music Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Numeron  are  a  band  from  Indonesia  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Road  To  Valhalla"  which  will  be  released  in  April  as  a  joint  effort  between  Tragedy  Productions  and  Meuse  Music  Records.

  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  Angry  shouts are  also  utilized  briefly.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  as  well  as  mixing  in  some  elements  of  blackgaze  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a   very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  and  a  couple  of  the  songs  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  Numeron  plays  a  style  of  post  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  and  aggressive  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  mythology,  darkness  and  dystopia  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  Numeron  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  post  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Light  Upon  The  Ground"  Valhalla"  and  "Epifora".  8  out  of  10.

Nemesis Sopor/Firmament/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Germany's  Nemesis  Sopor  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric  and  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  album  "Firmament"  which  will  be  released  in  March.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  while  some  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  riffs  also  ad d in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  Most  of  the  songs  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.  Clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  The  music  also  has  its  progressive  moments  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  and  whispers  as  well  as  one  song  also  introducing  growls  and  shouts  onto  the  recording  and  the y also  add  in  some  traditional  rock  influences  at  times  .  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  aspects  of  freedom.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Nemesis  Sopor  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Argus"  and  "Wall".  8  out  of  10.

Apocalyptic Leaders/Ashes Of Old/Illusionary Spectre/2023 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Greece's  Apocalyptic  Leaders  and  U.S.A's  Ashes  Of  Old  called  "Illusionary  Spectre"  which  was  self  release d in  2023  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Apocalyptic  leaders  a  solo  artist  who  returns  with  his  atmospheric,  melodic  and  raw  form  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  raw  tremolo  picking  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  vey  melodic  style.     

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  his  side  of t he  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  of  the  riffing  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  punk  elements  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  fear,  pain  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Apocalyptic  Leaders  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  melodic  and  raw  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK "The  Demon,  The  Son    of  The  Witch".

  Next  up  is  Ashes  Of  Old  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric    and  melodic  form  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  start s out  with  heavy  riffing  and  blast b eats  along  with  some  synths  a few  seconds  later.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  growling  style  and  the  tremolo  picking  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling.

  Throughout  his  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  more  of  a  melodic  style,  high  pitched  screams  can  also  be  heard  at  times,  clear  vocals  can  also b e  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  lo-fi  while t he  lyrics  cover  mountains,  forests  and  mysticism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ashes  of  Old  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  and  melodic  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Forest  mysterium".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  atmospheric,  melodic  and  raw  black  emtal.  8  out  of  10.

  Heaven's  Damnation  are  a  band  from  Denmark  that  plays  an  aggressive  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2023  album  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Vendetta  Records. 

   Acoustic  guitars  and  synths  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  a  few  seconds  later.  The  heavier  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  semi  melodic  tone  at  times.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  synths  also  mixing  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording ,  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Heaven's  Damnation  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black  and  death  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  violence  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Heaven's  Damnation  are  a  very  great  sounding  aggressive  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Storms,  Floods  And  Fires"  and  "Wheels  Of  Blood".  8  out  of  10.

  Diablation  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Per  le  Feu"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Osmose  Productions.

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  while  also  introducing  synths  onto  the  recording  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  and  symphonic  moments  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  era.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  songs  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  some  modern  influences  at  times  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  occultism  and  the  death  of  humanity.

  Italy's  solo  project  Derhead  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  experimental  and  avant  garde  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  "The  Grey  Zone  Phobia"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Brucia  Records.

  A  very  dark,  distorted,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts   off  the  album  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  fast  riffing  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while t he  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  avant  garde  structures.

  Synths  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  at  times  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  experimental  moments,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  contrast  between  reality  and  our  inner  self,  and  between  memories  and  dreams  and  also  adds  in  some  inspiration  from  the  philosophical  works  of  Henti  Bergson.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Derhead  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental  and  avant  garde  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Chaos  Is  For  You  Only"  and  "Drops  of  Storm".  8  out  of  10.

    Tjolgtar  are  s  solo  project  from  Kerney,  Illinois  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  these  recording  played  more  of  a  raw,  satanic  and  occult  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  compilation  album  "Black  Rhino  Holocaust/Nuun  Raaguun  Skuulkuun"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Eternal  Death  and  consists  of  his  2002  and  2004  demos.

  70's  style  riffing  starts  off  the  compilation  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  clear  vocals  also  being  utilized  briefly  and  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Touches  of  black'n'roll  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  clean  playing  also  being  utilized  briefly,  on  the  second  demo  the  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  more  70's  rock  influences  as  well  as  introducing  the  use  of  death  metal  growls  and  incorporating  more  clear  vocals  than  the  previous release,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Black  Arts,  Sacrifice  and  Murder  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Tjolgtar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  satanic,  occult  black  metal  and  black'n'roll,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Halls  Of  The  Pororium"  "Tjolgtjarium  Muun"  and  "Nuun  Raaguun  Skuulkuun".  8  out  of  10.

  Vesanus  are  a  solo  project  from  Italy  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  album  "Graveyard  Tales"  which  was  released  by  Kold  Cave  Production.

  A  synth  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  synths  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  and  the  closing  track  also  adds  in  a brief  use  of  whispers,  rain  and  thunder  sounds.

  Vesanus  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  atmospheric  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  war,  darkness  and  anti  religion  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Vesanus  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Odio"  and  "Gargoyle".  8  out  of  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Portugal's  Coldness  and  Irae  called  "We  Are  The  Ashes"  which  was  released  by  Nekrogoat  Heresy  Productions  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Coldness  a  solo  project  that  plays  an  old  school  form  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  befor4e  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of   tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  old  school  influences.

  Next  up  is  Irae  who  returns  with  his  old  school  style  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.   All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  his  side  of  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  keyboards  also  being  utilized  briefly.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Most  of  the  recording  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  old  school  style  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  and  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Portuguese  and  cover  Occultism  Darkness,  Alcohol  and  End  Of  Humanity  themes.    

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Irae  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Horizonte  de  Calamidades"  and  " Entre  os  Escombros  de  Gigantes".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  Portuguese  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Death Vanish/Hermitic Fire/Eternal Death/2023 EP Review

 

  Death  Vanish  are  a  solo  project  from  Connecticut  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  primitive  and  old  school  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  ep  "Hermitic  Fire"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Eternal  Death.

  Marching  sounds  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal s creams.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  keyboards  also  adding  in  touches  of  deathrock  when  they   are introduced  into  the  music   and  the  ep  is  heavily  rooted  in t he  early  90's  era. 

  One  of  the  tracks  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  also  bring  in  a  more  grim  atmosphere  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  On  some  of  the  tracks  the  music  also  goes  into  more  of  a  ritualistic  direction  along  with  all  of  the  songs  also  sticking  to  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  musical  direction,  blast  beats  and  fast  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  

  On  this  recording  Death  Vanish  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  primitive  and  shows  some  influences  of  the  more  slower  and  ritualistic  material  from  Profantica  and  Beherit  as  well  as  adding  in  elements  of  deathrock  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Hermeticism  and  Magick  themes.     

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Death  Vanish  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  promotive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "From  Down  There"  and  "Doctrine  Of  A  beast".  8 out  of  10.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  powerful  sounding  bass  guitar  which  is  used  as  a  lead  instruments  along  with  some  synths  and  keyboards  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  grim  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Melodies  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  clear  vocals  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  prehistoric  marine  arthropods  who  lived  during  the  Cambrian  Period.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Thecondontion  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Hallucigenia".

  Next  up  is  Ceremented  who  return  with  their  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  harsh  noises  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  briefly   before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  where  the  bas s guitars  take  over  as  a  lead  instrument.  Vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  while  blast  beats  can  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up.

  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  90's  era  influences  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  destructive  forces  of  nature  and  cataclysmic  events.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ceremented  and  if  you  are  a  fna  of  doom/death  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Timeworn  Furtherance".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Atemporal/Thorn Genesis/I, Voidhanger Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Atemporal  are  a  solo  project  from  Vancouver  B.C,  Canada  that  plays  an  avant  garde  and  occult  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a r eview  of  his  2023  album  "Thorn  Genesis"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  bestial  death  metal  growls  and  black  emtal  screams  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  riffs  also  mix  in a   good  amount  of  avant  garde  and  dissonant  structures.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  vey  melodic  yet  dissonant  style  while  the  songs  also  add  in a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  songs  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  the  closing  track.

  Atemporal  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  the  avant  garde,  dissonant  and  occult  form  of  black  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound of  his  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Esotericism,  Left  Hand  Path,  Human  Spirituality,  Fables,  Mythology  and  the  writings  of  H.P  Lovecraft.   

  In  my  opinion  Atemporal  are  a  very  great  sounding  avant g arde,  dissonant  and  occult  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  great  Warding"  and  "Meditaion  On  Azoth".  8  out  of  10.

Veredensdal Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

Since I write and compose everything I can only speak on my behalf. 

I have a full time job as well as my wife and two kids that keeps me busy enough but since the album has been completed I have been working on the next album that will follow this new one, as I normally do. Always burning. 

The writing is done, so I now have been working and really focusing on nailing the new guitar tone and recording the guitars. 

There is no time to slow down, as I have many more fresh and pungent ideas that must be taken down and realized before their authenticity is lost.

2.You have a new album coming out towards the end of March, musically how does it differ form the stuff you have released in the past?

The music is becoming much more personal and exploring influences is also much more apparent. I want the music, the rhythm and the whole "sonic" approach to be what moves people most so I'm focusing more on what affects the listener in a subconscious manner than on first listen. Something that sticks with you inside rather than just blanketing you with common expectations of what you know from said genre.  But who the fuck really knows what I'm talking about anyways...

 

I would say that each and every Vredensdal album manifests itself very uniquely so it's better described with a feeling than words however with this album, a goal I had was to write it in a way that will push further the development of what the signature Vredensdal sound is or could be and also what separates it from others. 

The difference for me is mostly in the recording process and how over the years I've learned a lot about mixing and mastering on my own. Just the general knowledge stuff and though it may not sound like pro studio quality im proud of the time, work and energy Ive put in. I'm hoping the sound really emphasizes the organic nature of the music.

3.A couple of the band members also play in a stoner doom metal, how would you compare the black metal stuff from this project with the other group that you perform in?

The band's have no relation and there is nothing to compare.

 I have officially killed all side projects and removed from my mind the desire to do anything other than Vredensdal. 

The expenditure of energy used on those projects was a most necessary process of elimination. Shaking out the bugs so to speak. 

What's done is done and is also done. 

For me, it's Vredensdal only.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Again, I write all things including lyrics and lyrically my main goal always has been to write things that are thought provoking. Things that help you question your existence and challenge you. 

In saying that, the lyrical content generally falls into a philosophical approach, most times combining the perspectives of Satanism, Heathenry, shadow work and even some of the most mundane fay to day things but dissected at a microcosmic level. Nature and connection to it is the roots of it all (pun intended) and to be clear I am a Satanist but NOT a theistic Satanist, there is no such thing in my opinion. I don't believe in deities or worship anything other than myself, I also don't believe in supernatural hocus pocus that has infected the black metal scene. Yet I digress, I'll leave the "Satansplaining" up to Magister Bill. 

I may reference Odin from time to time but that is also metaphorical, symbolic and for atmosphere. I have also since the beginning have done one song in Norwegian as an ode to my origins blah blah blah but I think moving forward I might take a break on that. We'll see. 

I like to make poetic references to things from varying perspectives to try and convey my personal understanding of life but I try to keep things within an active thinking realm, with exploration and wonder as building blocks for critical thinking. Sometimes it's very simple and other times it's absolutely not.

I may write about anything really but the words are very importantly directed to the listener just as much as they are apart of myself. I want people to pickup the booklets and actually read the words, contemplate them and reflect and all that.

I don't want people to just interpret the words "in their own way", I hope they find what they are looking for in them. Whatever that may be, just open your mind.

5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Vrendensdal"?

The name is roughly translated from Norwegian as "Valley Of Wrath". The purpose of Norwegian being in my ancestry and making up half of what I am by heritage.

The idea came from sitting and thinking of what some might call the "soul" or "life essence" that inhibits us. The valley being the meeting place of all things mental, emotional, physical, even metaphysical and what have you... whether or not you believe in that sort of thing.

It begs the question, what do you believe in and the ever more tantalizing, why?

I should clearly state that this does not mean I believe in the existence of a soul but recognize the all encompassing energy that makes up my mind and its illusions.

"What and where is your valley and what current wrath might it be experiencing?"

6. Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

On first glance the artwork is a straightforward look into the abysmal eyes of the Goblin Reaper. Is it me or is it just a painting? No one really knows. But what  everyone does know is what it feels like to stare into the mirror you wish wasn't looking back at you. 

The eyes are the window to the soul? What if there is no soul? Fuck all that even, it just looks badass and now the Goblin will be immortalized muahaha!

The back cover was the first draft of what was supposed to be the front cover. Initially I had the idea of a dragon rising from the smog of a ghostly looking factory as I have always loved the industrial aesthetic a factory can give off. 

Here in Green Bay Wisconsin, there are plenty of them around and I also work in an industrial building myself for my day job. I find the orchestral hum of machinery and windowless work rooms to be a strange portal to some spot in the mind. 

But... that didn't work out like I thought, it didn't have the pull I wanted so it ended up as the perfect back art.

After this I spoke a bit with the artist and we agreed to refocus on his strengths in portraits and shadowing.  I mentioned to him my love for... well, Lovecraft when he asked for the new direction and he basically said, in one way or another, "say no more." and took it from there. 

So here we are and I have to say that I am immensely pleased with the final product and with the amount of delectable texture he was able to mold into it.

7.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

No and no. Live shows is not what I'm about.

Vredensdal is music for the mind, a headspace for the damned so to speak and I will not tarnish its energy with performance mimicry. 

8.The new album is going to be released on 'Soulseller Records', how would you compare working with this label to other labels that you have been a part of in the past?

Personally this was a whole new experience for me, as I see it, this is my first time with a big label. So regardless of what I thought I knew, I have learned a lot more since working with this label and as mentioned before, I am more than honored and grateful to now be a part of the label who's bands have mostly has affected and influenced the origins of Vredensdal. 

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Vredensdal, being from the states, it was never my goal to be associated with just the American fans, I dont feel like the american mentality really suits the expressionism in the music. So immediately I shot for European exposure and in doing so I was able to get my first album pressed on a German label and then second on a Norwegian label. I have made real friends through these labels in these places and it cannot be understated that I am much more "in tune" will the mentalities presented. 

The history of metal in Europe carries more weight for me personally; quality and styling alike. If you know your metal history you might agree with me... 

And some may say Vredensdal has a more European sound than other American bands, which I hope is true but not for the sense of mimicking such bands, I'd prefer to be known as having an adept understanding of the development of styles and riffing techniques but more importantly the REASON behind the metal.  The music speaks for itself. 

In any case, the truth is... Vredensdal does have a much higher presence in Europe more than the Americas, namely Norway and Germany. But that list is rapidly expanding to many other countries which was both unexpected AND is celebrated by me. 

And if I'm reading anything from the fans throughout the world, from USA to Europe many more; by which I'm hoping I'm reading it correctly, i just want to say that the feeling and respect is mutual.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Mortkin and myself are solely devoted to Vredensdal. I cut all ties to any desire of doing another project.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I am always looking to push the sound as much as I'm capable at that time of writing. I want it to be the most stimulating music I can create and I want people to be sure that they cannot get this specific feeling of Vredensdal anywhere else. 

I believe that the sound is furiously heading into a varied landscape of sounds starting with heightened technicality, heavy metal, groove and heaviness but STILL remaining black. This is not heaviness in the sense of brutality (speed and volume) but the "weight" of the music, if you can think a bit deeper on the definition. 

I am mostly working towards an uninhibited approach to songwriting while also keeping the focus to purely metal. I wouldn't like to say that the music is getting more technical, I'd prefer the word progressive while also not be classified as progressive, including an advanced level of songwriting and very specifically riffing techniques and combinations.

It sounds wild but it's really not and maybe I don't know what I'm fully doing but  what I do know is that it's first and foremost what I want and not what I "think it should be". 

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

Truthfully I don't know what others listen to.

For me I am listening to such varied styles of music that it would not make sense to mention anything specific. I deeply believe that not all ARTISTIC things are created equal, that we should keep it that way and that we should not feel hesitant to discriminate on those things that don't need recognition or should downright not exist to begin with. Thin the herd.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Final words?

I hope you hate the new album so much that you actually want to buy it just to set it on fire and then cry over the fact that you, in a bitter rage of internal battle, begin to weep and furiously masturbate over destroying the one thing in life that ever meant anything to you.

  Ciemra  are  a  band from  Belarus  that  plays  a  very  aggressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "The  Tread  Of  Darkness"  which  was  released  by  Avantgarde  Music.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clear  vocals.

  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  dark  soundscapes  and  spoken  word  parts,  whispers  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  denial  of  the  usual  foundations  of  the  world,  the  darkest  manifestations  of  human  activity  and  the  energies  hidden  beyond  the  dark  abyss.  

  In  my  opinion  Cierma  are  a  very  great  sounding  modern  and  aggressive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ciemra"  "Call  of  The  Ancestors"  "Winter"  and  "When  Eyes  Close".  8  out  of  10.

  Ambient  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  at  times.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

 This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  U.S.A's  Crown  Of  Asteria  and  Canis  Dirus  called  "A  Harminous  Union  of  Vibration"  which  was  originally  released  in  2021  and  will  be  re-issued  during  April  by  Fiadh  Productions  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Crown  of  Asteria  a  solo  project  who  returns  with  her  folk  inspired  style  of  atmospheric  black  metal.

  Her  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  nature  orientated soundscapes  along  some  acoustic  guitars  a  few  seconds  alter  which  also  bring  in  elements  of  folk  music  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while t he  vocals  bring  in a   mixture  of  black  emtal  screams  and  growls.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  some  keyboards  also being  added  into  certain  sections  of t he  recording.  When t he  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast b eats  can  also be  heard  as  well  as  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  as  well  as  mixing  in  elements  of  dungeon  synth  and  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  an  epic  fantasy  soundtrack.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  vocals   are mostly  grim y et  depressive  sounding  black  emtal  screams.
