Mythraeum/Oblivion Aeternam/M-Theory Audio/2024 Full Length Review

Mythraeum  are  a  band  from  San  Diego,  California  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  technical  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Oblivion  Aeternam"  which  will b e  released  in  June  by  M-Theory  Audio.

Stringed  instruments  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  orchestration  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  brutal  direction.  Blast  beats  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  technical  direction.

When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  fast  riffing  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  symphonic  sounding  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  growls.  Operatic  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  a  couple  of  songs  also  introducing  clean  playing  and  classical  guitars  onto  the  album.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  esoteric  myths  of  nature,  gods,  love,  hate,  death  and  rebirth.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mythraeum  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  technical  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Crown  And  Sepsis"  "The  Hunter's  Dream"  "Skies  Torn  Asunder"  and  "Beyond  The  Void".  8  out  of  10.

Die Entweihung/Kings & Pawns/Acid Vicious Fanzine/BajoTierra/Inverted Chalice/2024 Album Re-Issue Review

This  is  a  review  of  an  earlier  album  from Israel's  solo  project  Die  Entweihung  which  showed  the  music  going  for  a  blackened  heavy  metal  style  and  the  album  was  originally  released  in  2021  and  called  "kings  &  Pawns"  which  was  re-issued  in  2024  as  a  joint  effort  between  Acid  Vicious  Fanzine,  Bajo  Tierra  and  Inverted  Chalice.

Static  sounds  and  keyboards  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction.  A  lot  of  the  mid  tempo  riffing  also  shows  an  influence  of  traditional  metal  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also   bringing  in  elements  of  doom  and  dark  metal  and  the  solos  and  leads also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody.

A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Middle  Eastern  style  melodies  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  touches  of  thrash  metal  also  being  mixed  in  with  some  of  the  riffs  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard.

Acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard on  a  couple  of  tracks  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  One  song  is  an  instrumental  and  also  introduces  keyboards  onto  the  album,  clear  vocals  and  death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  on  a  few  songs  and  there  are  also  some  John  Lennon  and  Der  Gerwelf  covers.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  conflicts  between  humans  and  the  world  around  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Die  Entweihung  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  heavy  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Moustached  God"  "Kings  &  pawns"  and  "Suns  of  Moon  And  Fire".  8  out  of  10.

    Widertod Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

Now that we are working with a label, there has been a lot of coordination regarding the record, design, artwork, release date, etc.

Besides that we are trying to get a live line up for the very near future.

    2. In June you have a new album coming out, musically how does it differ from your previous ep?

Our goal was to create a more mature album without losing the virginal, almost naive approach of our beginnings. In addition, a full length gives us the opportunity to vary more with the musical influences.

We also wanted to record everything as analog as possible, while the EP has mainly digital sounds. For example while we had up to 6 overlapping guitars at some points on the EP we only used one single guitar track on the left and one on the right which influenced the songwriting a lot.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer release and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Overall, the album is intended to create an unknown but strangely intimate feeling. We don’t like to define the topics of each song because everyone should feel free to have their own interpretation on them. Some are kind of obvious though like Chat Noir which is our tribute to our love for cats.

In the end, it is important to us that the music and the lyrics together express a certain mood.

4.In one interview you also mention an interest in the writings of H.P Lovecraft, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in his work and also do you have any interest in other authors?

While we made a tribute song about Lovecraft on the EP we excluded his stories from this album. We still love Lovecraft and our writing style is heavily influenced by him but the Lovecraft story for us had been told to the end.

In general, the early period of science fiction and horror is interesting because it is not the scientific but rather the imaginative approach that is chosen to describe the unexplainable.

Also the late Trevor Strnad will always be on our minds while writing lyrics. Sometimes we struggled with lines and we asked ourselves how he would’ve written it and it usually worked out.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Widertod'?

Widertod comes from a local fairytale and is some sort of life healing herb also called the “conqueror of death”. To be able to save someone from dying and the word itself just sounding awesome on its own was enough for us to say that’s our name.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The artwork represents a feeling we had after finishing the album. It’s not a clear statement but rather describes a mood, maybe. It took forever to find the right idea and we ended up with this and are quiet proud since it’s a selfmade artwork.

7.Currentyl there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

Definitely, we are currently working on getting a live line up.

8.The new album is coming out on 'Vendetta Records', how did you get in contact with this label?

Our EP was released by ourselves and the video for it was played on the infamous Blackmetalpromotion YouTube Channel.

Vendetta then luckily noticed and contacted us. It’s been a great collaboration ever since.

9.On  a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

We are still a tiny fish in the sea of metal in general but the feedback has been insane.

We never ever imagined selling CDs and shirts to Australia, US and all over Europe… for example we have been deeply in love with Swedish Metal for many years and we now sold merch to some guys in Sweden. How crazy is that? And even one dude in the land of Black Metal Norway has our shirt. It means the world to us.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We will see. The new music will be darker and hopefully more organic, if that makes sense. Right now the focus is on the release of Anemoia.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

Alec: I enjoy all kinds of music in general from Beatles to Queens Of The Stone Age to Behemoth. Especially after finishing the album I needed a break from metal. But I saw Ultar live these days and was overwhelmed by their performance so currently I’m diving deep into the Lovecraft black metal once again. Besides that I’m into old Metallica nowadays and for nostalgic reasons some old Metalcore bands like Unearth and many more.

Marc: In the last years I really got into russian Black Metal like “Ultar” and “Grima” and Woodgaze stuff like “TRNA”. In the moment also a  band called “Antrisch” and still everything from “DWEF” is on my heavy rotation.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We just can’t wait for Anemoia to be released and we hope some people will enjoy it. Special thanks to Vendetta for the collaboration and again we are very grateful for every single person who supports us in one way or another.

    Thank you for the interview.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  compilation  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  angry  shouts  also  being  utilized  at  times.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in a  mixture  of  modern  and  old  school  touches.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  compilation  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style.

Synths  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.  a  couple  of   songs  are  instrumentals  as  well  as  one  of  them  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  folk  instruments,  some  of  the  earlier  recordings  also  capture  a  very  lo-fi  atmosphere  and  growls,  clean  playing and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Portuguese  and  cover  Occultism,  Folklore,  Philosophy  and  Struggle  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Grievance  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rito  De  Passagem"  "Lust  For  Battle"  and  "Eterna  Noites  de  Inverno".  8  out  of  10.

    Wurgilnõ Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the solo project since the recording of the new album?

Since the album is finished, I've been mainly focusing on promoting it. Additionally, there will soon be a Colombian version of the debut album released along with the "Angst" EP. I had to create all the artwork for this. In the meantime, I've also been working on new material and started on songs for a project with the singer of the Belgian band Nether.

2.In June you have a new album coming out, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

The first album was initially intended as a demo, but Fetzner Death Records found it worthy and thus released it as an album with a bonus track. The main differences are the production, which is slightly tighter, and the fact that it was separately mastered. Also, a lot of time has been invested in researching the stories behind the songs and in the lyric writing process.

3.The lyrics cover the local legends of your home country, which stories from your local folklore have you covered with your songwriting so far?

I mainly use the stories and legends from Limburg, both Belgian and Dutch Limburg. Although the two provinces may be separated by a national border, myths and legends transcend boundaries. The most well-known legend in the region is that of the Bokkenrijders, a devilish gang of robbers who terrorized the area and spread murder and mayhem with the help of the devil. Additionally, I've used local tales such as the story of Entgen Luijten and the mining disaster in Brunssun in 1928. History is an important subject in my music.

4.I know that the bands name means 'a corpse on a gallow' in Dutch, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

The name originated when I discovered in my family tree that one of my ancestors was sentenced to the gallows for his alleged activities as a Bokkenrijder; he was to be hanged until his body fell off naturally. It seemed like a beautiful inspiration for a Black Metal band. I've been playing in Black Metal bands since I was 15, starting in 1990 with Belphegor (NL), which later became Inverted Pentagram. I see Wurgilnō's style more as a collection of all the Black Metal styles that I personally enjoy.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The cover represents the Limburg landscape. "Krijtland" refers to the chalk that is abundant here and has been used in buildings since Roman times. Limburg has an incredibly rich history; it was once a vast sea where creatures like the Mosasaurus thrived. The Mosasaurus was first discovered in the marl here and named after the Meuse River. This river later became important for the early inhabitants and the Romans who founded Maastricht (Ad Mosam Trajectum). The marl is a time capsule that encapsulates the entire history of the region, from fossils to flint used for weapons and tools, to the drawings and inscriptions in the quarries. It's truly fascinating.

6.You are also involved in a few other solo projects, how does the music of 'Wurgilnõ' differ from your other solo material?

Currently, alongside Wurgilnō, I'm also active in The Curse of Yig, which leans more towards Doom/Sludge with electronic influences, and we work on it with multiple people. Additionally, I'm collaborating with Joris Meeuwissen (Nether) on a project called Vergankelijk, which leans more towards Black/Doom and thematically explores the transience of the body. Musically, the main differences lie in the sound and playing style.

7.You also have worked with musicians in other bands or projects, do you feel you can accomplish more musically by working solo?

The biggest advantage is that I can record everything here at home in my own studio. Whenever I have an idea for a riff or something similar, I can record it immediately without having to consult others or discuss in a rehearsal space. A downside is the lack of feedback, and you have to be careful not to fall into a writer's block.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

The reactions to Wurgilnō have been quite positive over the past year. So much so that soon the first album, along with last year's EP, will be released on CD in South America. That's incredibly exciting, especially considering that all the lyrics are in Dutch.

9.What is going on with your other musical projects these days?

With The Curse of Yig, things are currently quiet as we've been without a drummer for a while. With Vergankelijk, we're now making plans for the first album, which we need to start writing. Additionally, I'm working on a new album for an old project that I actually stopped 12 years ago but recently created some more songs for.

10/.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

I love experimenting with effect pedals and sounds, so let's see where that takes me. I hope Krijtland gets noticed, and I can also make a follow-up album. There's no specific agenda or goal in that regard; making music is just a fun thing to do. I can express a lot of creativity and emotions through it.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles you are currently listening to nowadays?

I mainly listen to my Dutch colleagues because I notice that hardly any band in this scene sounds the same; there's an enormous amount of talent in the Low Countries. Bands like Beenkerver, Bezwering, Schavot, Shagor, Hellevaerder, and Duindwaler, all unique and very good. Additionally, I'm drawn to the darker side of music, things like Gott, Dool, Chelsea Wolfe, and Amenra.

12.Does Occultism play any role in your music?

In the past, it was more present in my lyrics than it is now, although there is still a hint of Occultism in the songs. The old tales are filled with superstition about witchcraft and devil worship. For example, the Bokkenrijders were suspected of devil worship, and even the mine disaster of 1928 was attributed to the devil because it happened on a Friday the 13th, and 13 miners lost their lives. I understand that for many people, Black Metal is associated with the occult, but I also believe that there are few bands that are actually well-versed in that subject matter. There's more to occultism than just having The Satanic Bible or The Book of the Law on the bookshelf.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

First of all, thank you for the interview, and I'd like to say to the readers, check out the album! There's a pre-order with some great t-shirt deals on my Bandcamp, so go take a look.
