Nachtgnawler/Medieval Devourer/Purity Through Fire/2025 EP Review

 

  Nachtgnawler  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  raw,  old  school  and  vampyric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  ep  "Medieval  Devourer"  which  will  be  released  on  March  21st  by  Purity  Through  Fire.

  High  pitched  black  metal  screams  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  old  school  era  of  the  genre  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  very  true  to  a  90's  style  which  also  has  its  melodic  moments  along  with  one  talk  also  adding  in  some  medieval  battle  sounds,  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  clear  singing.    

  On  this  recording  Nachtgnawler  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  aggressive  in  the  90's  tradition.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  medieval,  vampirism  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Nachtgnawler  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  old  school  and  vampyric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Medieval  Devourer"  and  "Desecrator".  8  out  of  10.

Dødmoon/Demo MMXXV/Signal Rex/2026 Demo Re-Issue Review

 

  Dødmoon  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  demo  which  will  be  re-issued  on  March  13th  by  Signal  Rex.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  demo  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  classic  Finnish  style  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  along  with  the  demo  also  always  sticking  to  a  heavier  musical  direction.

  Dødmoon  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  fast,  raw  and  aggressive  in  the  classic  Finnish  tradition.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism  theme.

  In  my  opinion  Dødmoon  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Victorious  Signs  Of  Arcane  Madness".  8 out  of  10.

Nixil/Drouth/Toward Dead Temples/2026 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  self  released  split  album  between  Baltimore,  Maryland's  Nixil  and  Portland,  Oregon's  Drouth  called  "Toward  Dead  Temples"  which  will  be  released  in  April  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Nixil  who  return  with  their  atmospheric  style  of   black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  synths  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  mixed  in  with  a  few  growls.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  their  side  of  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death  and  isolation  themes.  

   In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Nixil  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Never  Rise  Again".

  Next  up  is  Drouth  who  return  with  their  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal.

 Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  which  also  gives  their  side  of  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  black  metal  screams  mixed  in  with  some  crust  style  shouting.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  at  times,  some  of  the  slow  riffing  also  adds  in  elements  of  doom  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  misery  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Drouth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Outer  Church".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  i  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  modern  American  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Abyssidious/Malformed Light/Serpentine Star Convergence/2026 EP Review

 

  Abyssidious  are  a  solo  project  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  a  psychedelic  and  dissonant  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2026  ep  "Malformed  Light"  which  was  released  by  Serpentine  Star  Convergence.\

  A  very  fast  and  dissonant  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  vocals  also  adding  in  more  of  an  angry  black  metal  approach  mixed  in  with  a  few  growls.

  Throughout  the  ep  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  At  times  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  psychedelic  direction  along  with  some  synths  and  clean  playing  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording,  when  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  fast  riffing  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  closing  track  also  adds  in  some  guitar  solos  and  leads.

  On  this  recording  Abyssidious  brings  out  a  very  modern  and  dissonant  form  of  occult  black  emtal  with  some  psychedelic  touches.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Chaos  and  Violence  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Abyssidious  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dissonant,  psychedelic  and  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "To  Drink  From  Dethroned  Skulls".  8  out  of  10.

Possession/The Mother Of Darkness/iron Bonehead Productions/2026 Full Length Review

 

  Possession  are  a  band  from  Belgium  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  aggressive  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "The  Mother  of  Darkness"  which  was  released  by  iron  Bonehead  Productions.

  A  very  dark  sounding  into  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  bells,  synths  and  ritualistic  spoken  words  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  vocals  add  in a   mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can be  heard  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  bringing  in  more  of  an  old  school  extreme  metal  style,  angry  shouts  are  also  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  some  stringed  instruments  also  being  used  briefly  before  going  into  the  second  part  of  the  recording.  

  Possession  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  the  most  aggressive  styles  of  black  and  death  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Possession,  Demonolatry  and  Witchcraft  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Possession  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Black  Chapel"  "The  Mother  Of  Darkness"  and  "Young  Blood  Ritual".  8  out  of  10.
