Chovu are a band from Kenya that plays a shamanistic form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2025 album "Ufalme Wa Mali".
Folk instruments start off the album along with some chants and tribal style drumming which also captures a shamanistic atmosphere and also returns on a later track. Clear singing can also be heard at times while the harsh vocals are mostly black metal screams and spoken words are also used briefly.
Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while blast beats can also be heard in the faster sections of the songs. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with the album also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, when guitar solos and leads are finally utilized they are also done in a very melodic style, when tremolo picking is added into the faster riffing they also give the music more of a raw feeling.
Chovu plays a musical style that takes black metal and tribal African music and mixes them together to create a sound of their own. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are a concept album based upon African mythology and covers the story of a mysterious figure on a journey to safeguard precious scrolls from the historical Timbuktu library.
In my opinion Chovu are a very great sounding shamanistic black metal band and if you are looking for something that is very original, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Mweta Hazina Ni Nani" and "Ogalo". 8 out of 10.
