Harrow are a band from Victoria B.C, Canada that plays a very atmospheric and grim form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2011 demo "Forest Altar".
Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a good amount of blast beats being thrown into the riffing, while the bass playing has a very strong and powerful sound with heavy riffing that dominates throughout the recording.
Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast atmospheric black metal riffs that are very dark, heavy, raw and primitive sounding with some doom metal elements being used on the last song, while the lead guitars which are only used briefly are very dark sounding Cascadian black metal guitar solos and leads, as for the acoustic guitars which are only used on the last song use finger picking and full chords to bring elements of folk music to the ep.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams with some shamanistic style chanting being used on the intro as well as some clean singing being used briefly, while the lyrics cover dark themes, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound while you can still hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording with the last song being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Harrow are a very great sounding Northwestern style atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Watcher". RECOMMENDED BUY.
