Obitus Vitae are a 1 man band from Spain that plays an atmospheric form of black metal with elements of doom and ambient and this is a review of their 2013 album "Olfacit Mortis" which was released by Cimmerian Shade Recordings.
"Olfacit Mortis" which is also the first song on the album as well as title track opens up with slow, dark and heavy guitar riffs as well as some drums and a minute later grim black metal vocals make their way into the music and they evolve into screams when the music goes more into a more mid paced direction as well as having synths in the background and after awhile doom metal style melodies start to kick in along with some guitar leads.
"Mors In His Palude" begins with soft sounding synths and a few seconds later heavy guitar riffs come in along with drums, funeral doom elements and black metal vocals which leads to a faster direction along with some blast beats before alternating between slow and fast parts as well as adding some melody in the music which also leads up to a brief use of guitar solos and leads.
"Scaevus" opens up with dark ambient sounding synths along with some drone elements and the music is an all instrumental piece with no elements of black or doom metal as well as vocals being present.
"Umbrae Caeli" starts up with dark and atmospheric sounding synths as well as some drums and a few seconds later fast, raw and primitive black metal guitar riffs as well as some blast beats and grim screams kick in as well as the music alternating between slow and fast parts and towards the end there is a brief use of guitar leads being utilized.
"Anima Tenebrosa" kicks in with dark sounding ambient synths and a few seconds later melodic black metal guitar riffs along with drums and grim vocals kick in as well as some blast beats from the drums as well as alternating between slow and heavy parts while alos utilizing experimental elements from the synths.
"Abditorum" comes in with avant garde style synths and the song is a more dark ambient and experimental sounding piece and there are no elements of metal, vocals or other musical instruments present on the song.
"Misantropaie" breaks in with evil sounding, experimental and avant garde style synths and a few seconds later funeral doom style guitar riffs along with drums kick in along with some spoken word parts and after awhile melodic guitar riffing and grim black metal screams start to kick in while also keeping around synths.
"Advenere" hits it off with fast, raw and primitive black metal guitar riffs as well as some blast beats from the drums which also leads up to grim screams and after awhile the music slows down as well as getting more melodic and adding in deep growls before speeding up again along with a guitar solos.
"Mors Insidit Me" which is also the last song on the album begins with dark sounding synths as well as utilizing a variety of many different sounding keys and after awhile grim black metal vocals and spoken word parts are added in.
Song lyrics are written in Latin and cover occultism, necromancy, and misanthropy, while the production has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it.
In my opinion Obitus Vitae are a very great sounding black metal project with elements of doom and ambient and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. R ECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Olfacit Mortis" "Anima Tenebrosa" and "Misantropaie". RECOMMENDED BUY.
