Hermit Hill are a band from Illinois that plays black metal with elements of folk and progressive music and this is a review of their self released 2013 demo.
The ep starts out with some drums and melodic guitar riffs and the music goes into a heavier direction when the grim screams start kicking in while also keeping around the melodies and there are also death metal growls added to the recording.
As the demo moves on melodic vocals are added into the music and they bring a very ritualistic feeling to the recording as well as the black metal vocals utilizing more depressive elements and you can hear the folk and progressive influences in the guitar riffing and melodic vocals and you can also hear some thrash influences being utilized on the last song.
On these 4 songs that are displayed on this ep, Hermit Hill show a lot of promise for being a new band and there slow and grim approach to black metal has a very old school feeling to it and when they mix in folk and progressive elements it does not weaken their music and I would like to see what direction this band heads into on future releases.
Song lyrics cover dark and metaphysical themes, while the production has a very dark and raw sound on the 4 songs that are presented with this demo.
In my opinion Hermit Hill are a very great sounding black metal band with elements of death metal, folk and progressive music and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Executioner Sleeps In The Evening" and "Destined to Die". 8 out of 10.
