Frozen Ocean are a 1 man band from Russia that plays an atmospheric form of black metal with elements of ambient and electronica and this is a review of their 2014 album "The Dyson Swarm" which was released by Kristallblut Records.
The album starts of with a very dark, atmospheric and melodic sound along with some clean playing and a minute later the music gets a bit heavier and after the first song more atmospheric and dark ambient elements are added into the recording along with some melodic guitar leads which also take s the music into a more black metal direction along with some grim screams and vocals.
When we get more into the album the music sticks to mostly a slow atmospheric black metal direction while also adding in a great amount of melody, dark ambient and electronica elements as well as having a very epic feeling in the songs and a good amount of the tracks are instrumental and after awhile drones are added into the music and later on deep growls and melodic clean singing are added into one of the tracks.
With this album Frozen Ocean take a very atmospheric form of black metal and also experiments with dark ambient, post rock and electronica to create a sound of its own as well as bringing in a great amount of melody and emotion.
Song themes and lyrics cover scientific and philosophical topics, while the production has a very dark, powerful and heavy sound along with some of the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Frozen Ocean are a very great sounding mixture of atmospheric black metal, dark ambient and electronica and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Syzygy" "Sloan Great Wall" and "The Dyson Swarm". 8/5 out of 10.
