Uburen are a band from Norway that plays viking/black metal and this is a review of their self released 2014 album "Withered Roots".
Tribal and shamanistic style drumming starts off the album along with thunder sounds and powerful sounding bass guitars and a few seconds later chanting finds its way into the music and after the intro the music gets heavier and goes into a more melodic pagan/black metal direction along with some deep vocals that combine black and death metal together.
There is a good mixture of screams and growls throughout the recording and when blast beats are added into the music the album starts evoking a more raw feeling along with a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the band sticks mostly to a heavier style of viking metal while the music also has its atmospheric and epic moments at times.
As the album progresses spoken word parts are added into certain sections of the recording and a couple of the later tracks also sees the band bringing in a brief use of clean playing and the viking chants from the intro also make a brief return later on during the album and they also have a very melodic tone to them and the last track also sees the band adding in thrash influences into their musical sound.
Uberen bring a lot of heaviness into their mixture of viking and black metal as well as adding in some blackened death metal to create one of the heaviest pagan metal albums that has been released this year, the production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover Nordic Paganism and Vikings.
In my opinion Unburen are a very great sounding viking/black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sea Of Deceit" "Escape" "Kampen" and "Visions Of Valhalla". 8 out of 10.
