Ghast are a band from the United Kingdom that plays a mixture of raw black metal, sludge and doom metal and this is a review of their 2014 album "Dread Doom Ruin" which was released by Todestrieb Records.
A very dark and distorted sound along with a good amount of reverb and distortion starts off the album before going more into a doom/sludge metal direction along with some grim black metal screams and on the second track the music goes into more of a fast and raw black metal direction.
At time s you can hear blast beats in the music and the black metal side of the bands musical style is more in the early 90's direction and they also bring in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while also keeping around the sludge and doom metal elements into their approach to black metal.
After awhile melody can be heard in certain sections of the recording along with a few of the tracks being very long and epic in length and some of the faster sections have a crust punk feeling to them at times and the bass guitars have a very powerful sounding presence on the album and towards the end there is a brief use of melodic guitar leads and on some of the tracks the vocals have a very depressive tone to them at times.
Ghast takes a very dark and old school style of black metal which also combines a bit of the modern depressive sound and mixes it in with some of the heaviest styling's of sludge and doom metal as well as adding a bit of melody in the music to create a sound of their own, the production has a very dark, raw and heavy sound while the lyrics cover Paranoia, Dreams and Grimness themes.
In my opinion Ghast are a very great sounding mixture of raw depressive black metal, sludge and doom metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Festival Of Serpents" and "Lost In Fog". 8 out of 10.
