Akatharsia are a band from Oakland, California that plays a very raw from of black metal mixed with grunge, punk and drone and this is a review of their self released 2014 demo.
Clean playing which is also used again on a later track starts off the demo and it has a garage like atmosphere to it before adding in more of a lo-fi heavy sound which also brings in some grim sounding black metal screams and on the second track the music starts to go for more of a raw mid paced direction bringing in a punk rock and grunge vibe.
The black metal side of the bands musical sound is heavily rooted in the early 90's style and after awhile it speeds up a bit and brings in a small amount of blast beats and you can also some melody and guitar leads in the music at times along with a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while some of the reverb noises have a drone like quality to them.
Akatharsia plays mostly a raw style of black metal that also has some grunge and punk rock influences which also gives the band a more original vibe while still having a very dark atmosphere to them, the production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover dark themes with a philosophical twist.
In my opinion Akatharsia are a very great sounding raw black metal band with elements of punk and grunge and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Excreta" "Blood Opulence" and "Dross". 8 out of 10.
