Gnaw Their Tongues are a 1 man band from the Netherlands that has been featured before in this zine and plays a mixture of raw occult black metal, avant garde and doom metal and this is a review of a compilation record that will be released in 2015 by Crucial Blast and contains all of his work for this particular project from 2005 to 2009.
Dark sounding violins and avant garde sounds start off the compilation and after awhile the music starts going for more of an industrial noise direction and you can also hear some black metal screams in the background at times which also get more depressive as well as having a more powerful presence on some of the later tracks and a good portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length and also have an experimental feeling throughout all of the songs.
Most of the music sticks to a slower direction which also adds a doom metal feeling to the tracks and at times spoken word parts can be heard in certain sections of the recording as well as adding in s & m samples in some parts of a few tracks and as the album progresses the bass guitars start becoming more of a lead instrument on a good portion of the songs along with some regular rhythm guitars.
On a few tracks a decent amount of harsh power electronics and actual drums are added into the music adding in more of an underground and avant garde feeling and there are also some tracks that bring in raw sounding black metal guitar riffs and a small amount of blast beats and the music always gets diverse with each track adding in some epic style synths in with the heavy sound.
Gnaw Their Tongues combines a variety of many different musical styles together throughout the compilation with black metal being the main influence but there are also a good amount of doom metal, industrial, noise and experimental sounds being mixed in all of the tracks to create some very original and evil sounding music, the production sounds very dark and raw while you can hear all of the musical instruments on the compilation while the lyrics cover sex, violence, occultism and anti christian themes.
In my opinion this is a very great sounding collection of songs from Gnaw Their Tongues earlier days and if you are a fan of this band, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "For All Slaves...A Song Of False Hope II" "Slaves" "Another Study In Bleakness And Despair" and "Glorification Of Rats". 8 out of 10.
