Darkenhold are a band from France that plays an atmospheric and epic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2014 album "Catellum" which was released on cassette by Les Acteurs de I'Ombre Productions.
A very fast, raw, melodic and atmospheric black metal sound starts off the album along with some blast beats and all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and once vocals are added into the music they are grim screams and there is also a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Acoustic guitar playing can be heard in certain sections of the recording and the solos and leads that are heard on the album remain true to a melodic black metal style along with a good portion of the tracks being very long and epic in length and as the album progresses a small amount of spoken word parts are added into some of the songs.
Synths which are also a huge part of the album bring in a lot of epic and dungeon synth elements on the tracks that they are presented on and there are also a small amount of melodic chants being utilized that add more of a medieval and pagan atmosphere to the recording and they also bring in a brief instrumental before making a return to vocal tracks which also bring back quite a bit of the mid 90's atmospheric pagan/black metal sound.
Darkenhold plays a style of black metal that is mostly mid paced as well as being very melodic, epic and atmospheric in the 90's tradition of epic black metal, the production sounds very dark yet powerful at the same time while the lyrics are written in a mixture of French and English and cover Castles, Medieval and Fantasy themes.
In my opinion Darkenhold are a very great sounding epic and atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Strongholds Eternal Rivalry" "Glorious Horns" "Mountains Wayfaring Call" and "The Bulwarks Warlord". 8 out of 10.
