Hybrid Nightmares are a band from Australia that plays a very progressive form of black/extreme metal and this is a review of their 2015 ep "The First Age".
Sounds of wind start off the ep along with some acoustic guitars a few seconds later which also gives the recording a progressive rock vibe along with a good amount of finger picking and full chords and after the intro the music starts going for more of a black'n'roll direction while still being very progressive at the same time.
When solos and leads are utilized they are in a very melodic direction and the vocals that are utilized are high pitched black metal screams while some of the fast riffs and blast beats gives the music a raw vibe along with the songs using a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts that also shows a variety of influences from many different traditional and extreme metal genres and the music can also be very atmospheric at times along with a few tracks that are long and epic in length and on the last track a brief use of clean playing is utilized.
Hybrid Nightmares plays a style of black metal that is very progressive and heavily influence by some of the better known Norwegian bands and they bring in elements from a variety of many different metal genres to create a sound of their own, the production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover Stories, Absurdism, War and Battle themes.
In my opinion Hybrid Nightmares are a very decent sounding progressive black/extreme metal and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Illumination" and "Dead Star Goddess". 7/5 out of 10.
