Gloam are a band from California that has been featured before in this zine and plays a dark mixture of black and doom metal and this is a review of t heir 2015 album "Hex Of Nine Heads" which will be released on cassette on July 25th by Caligari Records.
the album starts out silently before adding in wind sounds along with some acoustic guitar playing a few seconds later and after the intro the music starts going into more of a heavy and melodic musical direction and after awhile growls and black metal screams are added into the music and they also bring in a very grim sounding atmosphere.
When solos and leads are utilized they are very dark, depressive and melodic sounding adding in a touch of early 90's doom/death metal and a great portion of the tracks a re very long and epic in length and the music also speeds up at times and also adds in a decent amount of blast beats and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Some of the faster sections bring in more of a raw black metal feeling and there are also some solos and leads that have more of a modern and progressive black metal style to them and the vocals also bring in depressive elements at times and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and they also bring in an instrumental before returning back to vocal tracks and they close the album with a classical guitar outro.
With this recording Gloam takes a very modern and atmospheric style of black metal and makes it more guitar based than most bands of that genre as well as mixing in a heavy dose of doom metal elements to create a recording that is very dark and heavy sounding, the production sounds very dark, raw and heavy while the lyrics cover death, magic, sorrow and hatred.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Gloam and if you are a fan of black and doom metal, you should check out this cassette. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Where Freezing Winds Forever Blow" "Execration Trance" and "Hex Of Nine Heads'. 8 out of 10.
