Ctulu are a band from Germany that has been featured before in this zine and plays a very fast, raw and melodic form of black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2016 album which will be released by MDD Records.
A very dark and heavy sound starts off the album along with some melodic guitar riffing and the solos and leads also use a great amount of melody and the vocals are mostly grim black metal screams and clean singing is also used at times and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard.
During the faster sections of the songs a decent amount of tremolo picking can be heard and it gives the music more of a raw black metal feeling and whispers can be heard at times along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the music also adds elements of death and thrash metal into some parts of the songs and as the album progresses a brief use of clean guitars can be heard.
Ctulu creates another album that remains true to the fast, raw and melodic style of black metal that was established on previous releases, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in German and cover Nightmares and Lovecraftian themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ctulu and if you are a fan of fast, raw and melodic black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Treibjagd" "Dammerung" and "Die Arkaden von R'yleh". 8 out of 10.
