Netherlands's solo project Gnaw Their Tongues have returned with a new recording that continues the experimental black metal style of previous releases and this is a review of his 2016 album "Hymns For The Broken, Swollen And Silent" which will be released in December by ConSouling Sounds.
Dark sounding drones start off the album along with some underground industrial noise elements a few seconds later which also leads up to drums and high pitched black metal screams being added onto the recording and synths are also utilized at times and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
Spoken word parts can be heard in certain sections of the recording and you can also hear elements of doom metal and dsbm in some of the tracks and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard while growls are also added into certain sections of the recording and one track introduces Gregorian chants onto the album while a later song also adds in influences of classical music and the faster sections of the songs are influenced by the more raw side of black metal and traces of harsh noise are also utilized on a regular basis and the last track brings in operatic female vocals.
Gnaw Their Tongues creates another album that remains very true to the experimental black metal style of previous recordings, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover bondage, torture, Occultism, Esoteric and Death themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Gnaw Their Tongues and if you are a fan of experimental black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Speared Promises" "Silent Burned Atrocities" and "Our Mouths Ridden With Worms". 8 out of 10.
