The Prisoner are a band from France that plays a very modern style of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2016 album "Life Of the Mind".
A very heavy sound along with some synths in the background start off the album which also gives the music more of an atmospheric feeling and the riffs also bring in a decent amount of melody and when the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard.
During the faster sections of the music the songs bring in more of a raw style while t he vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams and you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length and also mixes in some elements of post black metal along with some technical riffing.
The Prisoner plays a style of black metal that is very modern taking the raw old school style and mixing it in with more post elements and technical riffing to update the genre, the production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover dark and philosophical themes.
In my opinion The Prisoner are a very great sounding modern black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Emptied" "O Vengeance" "Acte Final" and "And So be It". 8 out of 10.
