Obscure Devotion are a band from Italy that plays an occult form of black metal with elements of death and post metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Ubi Ceta Pax Est" which was released as a joint effort between Third I Rex and Dark Horizon Records.
Atmospheric drones start off the album along with some ritualistic sounds and after the intro the music starts going into a heavier direction which also uses a great amount of blast beats and death metal influences while the vocals bring in a mixture of growls and black metal screams and melodies can be heard in the riffing.
Throughout the recording you can hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them while acoustic guitars are added into certain sections of the recording and the tremolo picking gives the songs more of a raw black metal feeling.
A great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length and as the album progresses more post metal elements are added onto the recording without losing any of the heaviness and there is also a brief use of whispers and when guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion and they also bring in an instrumental track before closing the album with an outro.
Obscure Devotion plays a musical style that takes an occult form of black metal and mixes it in with elements of death and post metal to create something very different, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover spiritualism, esotericism, and philosophical themes.
In my opinion Obscure Devotion are a very great sounding occult black metal band with elements of death and post metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ubi Certa Pax Est" "The Sign Of Pain" and "Beyond The Flesh". 8 out of 10.
