This is a review of another recording from Alberta, Canada's Tomhet which shows the music going for more of a raw and lo-fi depressive black metal direction and the album is called "Nightmare In Damask" and was released on cassette by Grey Matter Productions.
Ambient style keyboards and drones start off the album and after the intro the music goes into a heavier and lo-fi direction along with a decent amount of grim yet depressive screams and dark sounding melodies can also be heard in the guitar riffing while deep demonic voices are also used in some parts of the songs.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw black metal feeling and the tracks also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording.
A great portion of the songs are very short in length and as the album progresses drones make a brief return and distorted guitar leads are also used briefly and one of the tracks is very long and epic in length and harsh noises along with ambient soundscapes also returning are added onto the closing song.
Tomhet plays a style of black metal on this recording that is very raw, lo-fi and depressive and focuses less on the ambient style of previous releases, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover anti religion, nature, depression, death, and despair themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Tomhet and if you are a fan of raw, lo-fi, depressive black metal, you should check out this cassette.
