Malsumis are a band from Alaska that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Spirit Decay" which was released on cassette by Lycaean Triune.
A very heavy yet dark guitar sound starts off the album and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and after awhile death metal growls and high pitched black metal screams make their presence known along with a decent amount of melodic riffing and a couple of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard and the music also mixes in a great amount of Ukrainian influences and clean playing is also used at times and during the faster sections of the songs the riffs also use a great amount of tremolo picking which also gives the songs a more raw black metal feeling and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and atmospheric style synths are also used briefly.
Malsumis plays a style of atmospheric black metal that shows an influence of Hate Forest and Drudkh in the vocal approach while also having a style of their own, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Mythology themes.
In my opinion Malsumis are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this cassette. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Frostborn" and "Abyssal". 8 out of 10.
