Rotting Sky are a solo project from Portland, Oregon that plays a mixture of raw black metal, funeral doom, ambient, drone, industrial and noise and this is a review of his 2014 album "Sedation" which will be re-issued in February by Sentient Ruin Laboratories.
Distorted amp noises and drones start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the vocals are mostly grim and tortured sounding black metal screams and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
At time s the music gets very atmospheric along with some synths in the background that get more powerful after awhile and bring elements of ambient onto the recording while the guitar leads also remain very true to a raw musical style as well as some of the riffing also bringing in a small amount of melody.
All of the tracks are very long and epic in length while the music also brings in elements of harsh noise and death industrial at times along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and when the music slows down elements of funeral doom metal can also be heard briefly and there is also a brief use of clean guitars as the album progresses as w ell as the solos and leads also getting more melodic and clear vocals are also added onto the closing track.
Rotting Sky plays a musical style that takes raw and atmospheric black metal, funeral doom, drone, ambient, industrial and noise and mixes them together to create something very original, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark themes.
In my opinion Rotting Sky are a very great sounding mixture of raw and atmospheric black metal, funeral doom, ambient, drone, industrial and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Smile" and "Tyrants Of Sedation". 8 out of 10.
