Vorkuta are a band from Hungary that plays a very raw and old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2018 album "Where Still Darkness Dwells" which was released on cd by Metal or Die Records and cassette by Fekete Terror Productions.
Distorted amp sounds start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams along with the music being very heavily rooted in the 90's second wave style.
A great amount of dark sounding melodies can be heard in the guitar riffing while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some synths also being used briefly which also gives the music more of a ritualistic feeling as well as a couple of tracks also bringing in a brief use of clean guitars and some of the tracks a re very long and epic in length and when guitar leads are finally utilized they are done in a very raw and melodic fashion.
Vorkuta plays a style of black metal that is very raw and old school in the 90's European tradition, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover darkness, evil, war and Satanism themes.
In my opinion Vorkuta are a very great sounding raw and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "I Am The Warrior of The Past" "When The Ravens Dance in The Nightsky" "Black Winter" and "Prophecies'. 8 out of 10.
