Cromia Oscura are a band from Italy that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays a very raw, melodic and depressive form of black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "My Heart In A Very Dark Place" which was released by Depressive Illusions Records.
Melodic yet raw guitar leads start off the album along with some heavy riffing a few seconds later and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard while the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams and the music also has a lot of 90's influences.
Acoustic guitars can also be heard mixed in the heavier sections of the songs on some of the tracks while the music also brings in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some elements of thrash also being used at times as well as the riffs also using a great amount of melody.
At times the music brings in some depressive elements and as the album progresses synths can also be heard briefly as w ell as the guitar leads utilizing more skill and talent along with some of the vocals also throwing in angry shouts while one of the later tracks is an instrumental before returning back to vocal tracks and one sing also brings in a few seconds of clean singing.
On this recording Cromia Oscura are a lot less thrash influenced and plays a style that mixes the raw, melodic and depressive sides of black metal together, the production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover death, suicide and voidness themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Cromia Oscura and if you are a fan of raw, melodic and depressive black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "My heart in A Very Dark Place" "Luna Storta" and "Etna". 8/5 out of 10.
