California's Dunnock have returned with a new recording which shows the music mixing raw, atmospheric and lo-fi black metal with some elements of noise, punk, garage and psychedelia and this is a review of their 2018 album "Little Stories Told By Ghosts" which will be released in May by Acephale Winter.
Filed recordings and ambient style soundscapes start off the album along with some clean playing a few seconds later while the music also gets very experimental and avant garde at times as well as the synths also giving the songs more of an atmospheric feeling and spoken word parts are also used on some of the tracks.
All of the tracks are very long and epic in length while the music also brings in a great amount of harsh noise elements while the tremolo picking and blast beats during the faster sections of the songs gives the music more of a raw feeling as well as the music also bringing in a great amount of high pitched black metal screams.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the songs also bring in a great amount of psychedelic elements along with some 70's to 80's era dance music samples and synth pop influences also being used briefly as well as all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them, some songs also bring in a small amount of guitar leads and all of the tracks sound very different from each other and acoustic guitars are added onto the closing song.
On this recording Dunnock keeps the black metal elements while also adding in more noise, experimental, avant garde, synth pop, psychedelic and ambient elements to create an album that cannot be categorized, the production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi while the lyrics are a concept album based upon four fictionalized murders of bodies found near waters.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Dunnock and if you are a fan of black metal and experimental music, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Young Boy's Body - Deretis Playground - 1996" and "Middle Aged Man's Body - Fish Creek - 2002". 8 out of 10.
