Saor are a solo project from Scotland that plays a mixture of atmospheric black metal and Celtic and Scottish folk music and this is a review of his 2019 album "Forgotten Paths" which will be released in February by Avantgarde Music.
A very fast, raw and melodic sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the solos and leads also bring in a decent amount of melody along with the music also getting very atmospheric at times and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
Folk instruments can also be heard at times while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with most of the tracks being very long and epic in length as well as some musical instruments also being added into certain sections of the recording and the vocals are mostly deep yet grim black metal screams and growls.
Whispers are also added into some parts of the music while keyboards are also utilized at times along with one track also adding in a small amount of post rock elements as well as some Celtic and Scottish folk music influences also being mixed in with the heavier parts of the music, as the recording progresses a brief use of female vocals can also be heard and the album closes with an instrumental.
Saor plays a musical style that takes atmospheric black metal, Celtic and Scottish folk music and mixes them together to create a sound of their own, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Scottish heritage, literature, landscapes, history, sorrow and nature themes.
In my opinion Saor is a very great sounding mixture of atmospheric black metal, Scottish and Celtic folk music and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Forgotten Paths" and "Bron". 8 out of 10.
