Nodus Tollens are a solo project from Indiana that plays a very atmospheric and depressive form of black metal and this is a review of his 2020 album "Melancholic Waters Ablaze With Fires Of Loss" which was released by Trepanation Recordings.
Water sounds and spoken word parts start off the album along with some clean playing a few seconds later. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while the music also goes into a heavier direction on the second track as well as adding some acoustic guitars in certain sections of the recording.
All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them while the vocals are mostly depressive black metal screams. All of the drum beats are also programmed along with most of the tracks also being very long and epic in length as well as some songs also adding in a decent amount of clean playing.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding along with the tremolo picking also giving the recording more of a raw feeling when it is utilized. As the album progresses a brief use of violins and an instrumental can also be heard and the songs stick to either a slow or mid tempo style, a later track also adds in a brief use of melodic chants and clean singing. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover depression, existential themes, anti-toxic masculinity and anti-fascism themes.
In my opinion Nodus Tollens is a very great sounding atmospheric and depressive black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Hexenwald/Wolfinninwald" and "Ad Meliora". 8 out of 10.
