Spain's Balmog have returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of a mixture of black and death metal with some elements of post punk, psycho rock and traditional metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "Eve" which will be released in May by War Anthem Records.
A very dark yet heavy sound starts off the album while melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing. Keyboards are also utilized at times and they also add in touches of post punk along while the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
Elements of goth and psycho rock are also added into some parts of the recording while clean vocals are also utilized at times. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard along with the solos and leads also being done in a very dark yet melodic style which also shows an influence of traditional metal at times.
When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the music more of a raw feeling along with some of the riffs and leads also adding in a good amount of dissonant structures as well as the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, the riffs also bring in the heaviness of death metal and as the album progresses a keyboard orientated instrumental can also be heard before returning back to a heavier direction.
Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly on a couple of songs. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover human madness and real suffering and are also inspired by the writings of Portuguese author Pessoa and the theosophical texts of Galizian Xose Maria Diaz Castro.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Balmag and if you are a fan of black and death metal with elements of post punk, psycho rock and traditional metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Birth of Feral" "Slander" and "Carrion heart". 8 out of 10.
