Netherlands's solo project Cloak Of Altering has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of an experimental and avant garde style of black metal with elements of industrial and electronic music and this is a review of his 2021 album "Sheathed Swords With Dripping Honey" which will b e released in June by Brucia Records.
Dark sounding synths and heavy riffs start off the album while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with all of the drum beats being programmed and the vocals are mostly angry sounding black metal screams.
At times the music also gets very avant garde and experimental sounding while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of blast beats. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with some spoken word parts also being added into certain sections of the recording.
Throughout the album you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the music also adding in a decent amount of industrial and electronic music elements. Dissonant structures can also be heard in some parts of the recording as well as the screams also getting more high pitched as the album progresses.
Some of the songs also very long and epic in length and some tracks also add in a small amount of clean playing. When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the songs more of a raw feeling along with one song also adding in a small amount of sci-fi style clean vocals onto the album. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover occultism, cosmos, abstract, surrealism and science fiction themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Cloak Of Altering and if you are a fan of avant garde and experimental black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "I have Missed the Light So Much" and "The Jesuscraft". 8 out of 10.
