Sarpa are a solo project from Austin, Texas that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays a mixture of black, death and thrash metal with elements of industrial and progressive rock and this is a review of his self released ep "Mauta Tala" which will be released in 2023.
Storm sounds and field recordings start off the ep before going into a heavier musical direction while the solos and leads are also done in a very dark yet melodic style. Vocals are a mixture of black metal screams and death metal growls along with the faster sections of the songs also adding in a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling.
All of the musical instruments on the ep also have a very powerful sound to them while melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing. At times the music also gets very progressive sounding along with most of the tracks also being very long and epic in length as well a s some elements of thrash metal being added into the guitar riffing at times.
Keyboards and industrial style beats can also be heard in certain sections of the recording along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as some acoustic guitars, percussion, chants and spoken word parts also being utilized briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover the American Southwest Desert.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Sarpa and if you are a fan of progressive black and death metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "It Looms". 8 out of 10.
