Ser was a solo project from the United States that played a mixture of depressive black metal, dark ambient and dungeon synth and this is a review of his 2018 album "In Fade of Memories..." which will be re-issued in March 2023 by Northern Silence Productions.
Dark soundscapes start off the album along with some ambient style synths a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. Spoken word parts can also be heard in certain sections of the recording while a great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length and the clean sections also add in touches of post rock,
Vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams while the riffs also add in a decent amount of dark sounding melodies. Female vocals can also be heard on a couple of songs along with all of the musical instruments on the album also having a very powerful sound to them and a great portion of the tracks are instrumentals.
Elements of dungeon synth can also be heard at times along with all of the drum beats also being programmed. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic post metal style as well as a couple of songs also adding in a brief use of blast beats and a couple of later tracks also adds in a brief use of clear male vocals, when tremolo picking is utilized briefly they also give the music more of a raw feeling. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover nature and depression themes.
In my opinion Ser are a very great sounding mixture of depressive black metal, post rock, dark ambient and dungeon synth and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Withering In Her Memory" "Melancholy" "On the 14th Autumn" and "River Of her orchid Dream". 8 out of 10.
