Chile's solo project Gryftigaen has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of a raw lo-fi and form of black metal and this is a review of his 2023 album "Wurmwaldgaistoz" which was released by Inferna Profundus Records.
Wind sounds start off the album along with some synths a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. Most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the music also has its atmospheric moment and the songs also capture a very lo-fi atmosphere.
Vocals are done in mostly grim yet tortured sounding black metal styles while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. The songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the music also has its dissonant moments, clean playing can also be heard on the closing track.
On this recording Grytigaen moves away from the ambient elements of earlier releases and takes his raw, lo-fi and atmospheric style of black metal into more of a dissonant direction. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover the realm of the dead, coldness, occultism, mysticism and philosophical themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Gryftigaen and if you are a fan of raw, lo-fi and atmospheric black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Chthonic Lithos - Consigned In Vitric Portals" and "Dusk Of Hyperborean Frost In Eternity". 8 out of 10.
