Profane Elegy are a band from Pennsylvania that plays a very atmospheric and melodic form of black metal with elements of doom and progressive metal and this is a review of their self released 2023 ep "When All Is Nothing".
A very fast and raw sound starts off the ep along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the riffs also add in a lot of melody along with the clean playing also giving the music more of a progressive feeling when they are utilized.
Clear vocals are also added on some of the tracks while the keyboards also give the songs more of an atmospheric touch when they are utilized. Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the slower sections of the ep bringing in elements of doom metal.
One song also adds in a brief use of acoustic guitars along with some tracks also adding in a small amount of growls and whispered vocals can also be heard in certain sections of the recording. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover the darkness of life, man and god.
In my opinion Profane Elegy are a very great sounding atmospheric and melodic black metal band with elements of doom and progressive metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Judas the martyr" and "My Scars Are my Crucifix". 8 out of 10.
