Snøstorm/Into The Longest Of Nights/Talheim Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Snøstorm  are  a n  international  duo  with  members  from  Bulgaria  and  Norway  that  plays  a  very  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  "Into  The  Longest  Of  Nights"  which  was  released b y  Talheim  Records.

  Water  sounds  and  classical  guitars  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  whispers  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  vocals  being  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  songs  also  add  in  a good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  the,.  Clear  vocals  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  and  female  vocals  can  also b e  heard  briefly.

  Snøstorm  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  aggressive  and  melodic  sounding  as  well a s  adding  in  a  touch  of  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  Norwegian  and  cover  death  and  spirituality  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Sinstorm  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  black  metal  duo  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Eternal  "The  King  of  Giants"  "The  Edge  Of  The  Abyss"  and  "Now  Ascend".  8  out  of  10.

Outland Hill/Dodecahedron/Weregnome Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Outland  Hill  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal  and  synthwave  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Dodecahedron"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Wregnome  Records.

  Synths  start  off  the  album  bringing  in  elements  of  synthwave  as  well  as  mixing  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast b eats  can  also  be  heard.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow, mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  words.

  Outland  Hill  plays  a  musical  style  that  takers  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  synthwave  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  a  small  town  that  is  tortured  by  an  interdimensional  that  controls  the  weak  minds  of  children.

  Necromass  not  to  be  confused  with  the  band  from  Italy  of  the  same  name  are  a  solo  project  from the  United  States  that  plays  a  ferocious  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  album  "Exsanguinati  Sacerdotes"  which  will b e  released  in  2024  by  Fiadh  Productions.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  high  pitched  black  emtal  screams  and  growls  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  modern  and  old  school  influences.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  elements  of  crust  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  utilized  briefly,  synths  are  also  introduced  on  one  of  the  tracks  and  the  closing  song  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  which  also  adds  in  some  movie  samples.

  Necromass  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  also  mixes  in  elements  of  crust  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Spanish  and  cover  Anti  Christianity  and  Satanism  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  Necromass  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "In  Asino  Christi"  and  "Satanae  Cultri".  8  out  of  10.

   

Narzissus/Akt III: Erlösung/Fiadh Productions/Shape Of Storms Records/2023 EP Review

 

   Narzissus  are  a  solo  project  that  play  a  very  atmospheric  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  ep "Akt  III:  Erlösung"  which  will  be  released  in  2024  as  a  joint  effort  between  Fiadh  Productions  and  Shape  Of  Storms  Records.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  keyboards,  spoken  word  parts  and  female  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while t he  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also be  heard  along  with  the  fast  tremolo  picking  also  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.

 Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,    Spanish  guitars  and  folk  instruments  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  the  recording  also  adding  in  touches  of  progressive  rock  and  indie  pop. The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  renewal  and  redemption  themes.

  Rutile  are  a  solo  project  from  Boston,  Massachusetts  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric,  experimental  and  raw  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  ep  "Virtuous  Season"  which  will  be  released  in  2024  by  Fiadh  Productions.

  

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  deep  growls  and  black  metal  screams  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style,  clean  playing  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  and  experimental  moments,  one  song  is  also  an  instrumental  and  clean  chants  are  added  on  the  bonus  track.  

  

  Rutile  plays  a  style  of  post  black  metal  that  is  very  raw,  atmospheric  and  experimental  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  darkness  themes.

  Texas's  Cara  Neir  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  post  black  metal  and  crust  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "Portals  To  A  Better,  Dead  World"  which  will  be  released  in  2024  by  Fiadh  Productions.

  A  very  heavy  post  punk  influenced  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  Elements  of  crust  can  also  be  heard  in  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  When  guitars  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Everdead  Wood  are  a  band  from  Ireland  that  plays  a  very  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "In  Pious  Chains"  which  will b e  released  in  December by  Fiadh  Productions.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  evolve  into  high  pitched  black  metal  and  also  takes  the  music  into  a  heavier  direction.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  at  times  the  album  gets  very  progressive  sounding.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Dark  soundscapes  and  field  recordings  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  distorted  amp  sounds  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  progressive  direction.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  good  amount  of  melody.

  Post  rock  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  while  the  music  also  brings  in  elements  of  shoegaze.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  a  very  lo-fi  atmosphere  on  some  of  the  tracks.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  psychedelic  sounding  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily   rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  era  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  at  times.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style  and  the  whole  recording  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

  On  this  recording  Avskräde  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  old  school  in the  mid  90's  Scandinavian  tradition.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  darkness  themes.

   A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length, melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  most  of  the  recording  sticks  to  a  mid  tempo  direction  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  whispered  vocals  and  keyboards  are  added  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  depression,  anxiety,  agoraphobia,  schizophrenia  and  loneliness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Sacrimoon  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Y.O.U  (Years  of  Unhappiness)"  "Don't  Bring  Me  back"  and  "The  Unsent  Letter".  8 out  of  10.

Perdition's Light/Sequenzen des Niedergangs/Talheim Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Perdition's  Light  are  a  duo  from  Germany  that  plays  a  progressive  and  atmospheric  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  on  this  recording  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Sequenzen  des  Niedergangs"  which  was  released  by  Talheim  Records.

  A  very  heavy,  melodic  and  atmospheric  sound  stars  off  the  album  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.  Vocals  are mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  solos  and  leads  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  along  with  some  gutturall  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  clear  vocals  also  add  in  some  avant  garde  touches  when  they  are  introduced  into  the  music.   

  Synths  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  songs  along  with  some  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  Elements  of  death  metal  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  all  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  existential  despair.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Perdition's  Light  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  and  atmospheric  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Sterbend"  "Domen"  "Nebel"  and  "Rot".  8  out  of  10.

  DVVAD  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  aggressive  and  atmospheric  sounding  as  well  as  adding  in  elements  of  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  solar  eclipses  from  the  perspective  of  a  person  trapped  in  the  process  for  eternity.  

  In  my  opinion  DVVAD  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "I"  and  "IV".  8  out  of  10.

  Cholera  are  a  band  from  Slovakia  that  plays  an  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  album  "peccatum  originale".

  A  tribal  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  vocals  adding  in  more  of  a  deeper  growling  approach  which  is  still  rooted  in  black  metal.

 

 When  the  music  speed s up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  high  pitched  screams  also  being  utilized  at  times.

    The  music  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  old  school  touches  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  songs.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Slovakian  and  cover  darkness  and  misanthropy  themes.

  Nigrum  Vortex  are  a  band  from  Peru  that  plays  a  very  fast  and  aggressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  ep  "Across  The  Nigrum  Vortex"  which  was  released  by  Oratorivm  Records.

  A  very  fast,  raw  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  of  the  riffing  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  and  the  songs  also  add  in a   good  mixture  of  old  school  and  modern  influences.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  angry  shouts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  Some  of  the  riffing  also  adds  in  elements  of  death  metal along  with  all  of  the  songs  avoiding  the  use  of  solos  and  leads  and  the  whole  recording  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

  Nigrum  Vortex  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  fast,  aggressive,  raw  and  brutal  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  death  and  horror  themes.

  Australia's  Krvna  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  melodic  and  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  ep  "The  Rhythmus  Of  Death  Eternal"  which  will  be  released  in  2024  by  Zazen  Sounds.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  fast  riffing  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  the  ep  closes  with  some  Abigor  and  Bathory  covers.

  In  this  recording  Krvna  takes  their  music  into  more of  a  melodic  and  old  school  black  metal  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  existentialism  and  the  death  of  God  and  criticism  of  his  ultimate  creation.

  Ukraine's Bergrizen  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  returning  back  to  more  of  an  epic  and  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  "Die  Falle"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Purity  Through  Fire.

  Night  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Schreigarm Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the album?

Styrr: “Hi! First of all, thank you for inviting us to the interview. Yes, we just recently released an album “The Mysteries of Fate” on the label Werewolf Promotion. The album sounds very powerful and atmospheric. We are very pleased with the final product.”

Ingvarr: “The moderately raw sound of 'The Mysteries of Fate', combined with epic keyboards and a magical symbiosis of clean and extreme vocals, create an incredible atmosphere, immersing the listener in the enchanting world of this conceptual epic.”

2.Recently you have released your first full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

Styrr: “It's a little difficult... On our album you can hear influences and classical elements of various styles such as Black Metal, Post Metal, Viking Metal, MDM and others…”

Ingvarr: “From the very beginning, we didn't want to stick to any specific style, we were and we are very open to experiments and didn't want to focus on something specific…”

3.The lyrics on the new recording are a concept album, can you tell us a little bit more about the story that you covered with this release?

Styrr: “ “The Mysteries of Fate” is a conceptual metal saga about the thorny path of a warrior in pre-Christian times, from birth and formation, through the bitterness of farewells and first bloody battles, to death and rebirth…”

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Schreigarm'?

Ingvarr: “Schreigarm literally means the scream(from German) of Garm. The howl of Garm is one of the signs of the beginning of Ragnarök. In other words - harbinger of the Apocalypse! We believe it's a very powerful name for the band.”

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Styrr: “On the cover depicts pagan ritual objects against the background of yellowed oak leaves. The bones symbolize our attitude towards death, our pagan perception of the surrounding world, our worldview. Autumn leaves symbolize, on the one hand, the withering of the life cycle, but on the other, instead of fallen leaves, new ones always grow... This is the main concept of our album "Secrets of Fate" - the beginning born from the end. Everything in our universe is cyclical, everything goes in a circle, rejuvenates. Well, and the leaves are specifically from an oak, as the oak has always been a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. (All pagan ritual attributes are handmade by me, the photo and concept are also my).”

6. Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

Styrr: “We are absolutely planning to expand our band. At least we need a drummer for live performances.”

Ingvarr: “We are more than open to expand, we are actively searching for band members drummer and bass. And it would be a great time when we can invite the whole orchestra to make an awesome show.”

7.Both of the band members are from Ukraine but now reside in Germany, can you tell us a little bit more about the move?

Styrr: “Ingvarr and I moved to Germany in 2018 and 2016 respectively, for new opportunities. We learned about each other in 2019 through a mutual friend in the metal music scene of Ukraine. Remarkably, we both settled near the same city, Neuss. This is where the story of the band begins.“

8.Are there any plans for tours or live shows in the future?

Ingvarr: “Absolutely, concerts and festivals are the best places where you can convey emotions, immerse yourself in the atmosphere, and experience it all together with the audience. Currently, there are no specific plans, as finding band members is our first priority, but we will make every effort to play as many live concerts as possible.”

9. On a worldwide level, how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Styrr: ”The reaction is very positive. And we are very pleased with this!”

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Ingvarr: “At the moment, we have already written material for the second album and are in the pre production stage. And despite having just released our debut album, we can't wait to share the new material with everyone.”

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Ingvarr: "Well, musical influences could be listed extensively, but the main ones are probably: Khors, Drudkh, Austere, Harakiri For the Sky, Alcest, Ellende, Insomnium and many other bands, ranging from classic rock to various kinds of metal.”

12.How would you describe your views on Paganism?

Ingvarr: “Paganism for us is not a religion but a worldview.”
