Óðkraptr are a band from Denmark that plays an avant garde form of black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2024 album which will be released in April by Signal Rex.
A very avant garde sound starts off the album and also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. Most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the music also captures a very ritualistic atmosphere at times and the riffs also add in a decent amount of dark sounding melodies.
Synths which also add in touches of ambient are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording while the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched sounding black metal screams. Clean playing is also utilized quite a bit throughout the album and the songs also mix in some modern classical and electroacoustic elements.
At times the recording also gets very experimental sounding along with one song showing the vocals going into more of a deeper direction. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very dark yet melodic style as well as one of the tracks also being an instrumental, when the music finally speeds up on a couple of songs a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard and most of the album sticks to a slower direction. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Danish and cover Occultism and Supernatural themes.
In my opinion Óðkraptr are a very great sounding avant garde black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genres, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Nattens Pol" and "Det Onde Øje". 8 out of 10.
