This is a review of an older recording from France's Ysengrin which showed the music going for an occult mixture of black, doom and death metal and the album was originally released in 2012 and called "To Endotation" and will be re-issued in September 2024 as a joint effort between I, Voidhanger Records and Rubeus Obex.
Acoustic guitars starts off the album while the only song that is presented on the recording is over 40 minutes in length. Elements of doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the song along with the riffs also adding in a great amount of melody and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
Vocals are a mixture of death metal growls and black metal screams while keyboards can also be heard at times. Most of the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's era along with the spoken word parts also giving the track more of a ritualistic vibe when they are utilized and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style.
The track also has its psychedelic moments and when the song finally speeds up a small amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can also be heard and most of the recording sticks to either a slow or mid tempo direction. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics are a concept album based upon an initiatic rite taking place in the dark ages.
In my opinion this was another great sounding recording from Ysengrin and if you are a f an of occult black, doom and death metal, you should check out this re-issue. 8 out of 10.
