Thyrathen are a band from Greece that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording goes for a diachronic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Lakonic" which will be released in November nu Floga.
Synths and lyres start off the album along with some clear vocals a few seconds later while whispers and spoken word parts can also be heard briefly before going into a heavier direction. Vocals are a mostly grim yet angry sounding black metal screams and the riffs also add in a great amount of melody.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some of the clear vocals also adding in some avant garde touches at times.
Choirs and angry shouts are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style when they are utilized. Touches of Greek folk music can also be heard at times. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover paganism, fantasy, mythological, philosophical and poetic themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Thyrathen and if you are a fan of epic and atmospheric black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Throne Of Micro Cosmos (Foolishness)" "De Rerum Natura" and "Scales & Swords (The Fall of Justice)". 8 out of 10.
