Black Forest where a band from New Zealand that played black metal mixed with crust and this is a review of their self titled and self released 2013 album.
"Suffer" starts off with some powerful drumming, crust punk style bass and blackened crust riffs that utilize some melody along with voices in the background and then the song speeds up and introduce's the grim sounding black metal screams while also mixing in slow and mid paced sections.
"Crimson Trials" starts off with some powerful drums, bass guitar, primitive black metal riffing before speeding up in a more crust direction and introducing the screams before the music slows down while also returning to the fast parts at times mixing in some blast beats.
"Rotten Dreams starts off with slow drum beats and powerful bass playing before the slow atmospheric black metal riffs make their way into the music and then the song speeds up with primitive riffing and grim screams while also mixing in some punk style melodies as well as slowing down in some parts and returning to the bass solo.
"Father Frost" starts off with some powerful drumming and mid paced black metal riffing along with a powerful bass in the background setting up the pace for the screams kick in until going on a more fast and primitive direction with a good amount of blast beats then slowing down to a more crust style direction and the song speeds back up again towards to the end.
"Sparogmos" starts with with drums and old school style black/thrash riffing along with a primitive bass in the background as well as dark sounding melodies in the guitar riffs which leads to the introduction of the screams before slowing down and going into a more doom metal sounding direction for a few seconds before getting fast again.
"Wrath" begins with a powerful bass guitar, drums until the fast old school black metal riffs kick in along with blast beats and grim screams before slowing down for a second as well as getting faster again adding in crust and d-beat elements while also throwing in mid paced sections at times.and the song closes with a primitive old school metal guitar solo.
"Black Ocean" starts off with blast beats, fast bass, primitive black metal riffs and screams and after the song slows down to slower crust direction along with some doom elements which sets up the pace for a brief melodic guitar lead and as the song moves on keys make their way in the song for a second before the end.
"Herne The Hunter" starts off with blast beats, fast bass, primitive black metal riffs, high pitched screams while also switching back and forth from fast to slow crust parts as well as a brief guitar lead getting mixed in with the song for a few seconds.
Lyrics on the album cover Paganism, Mythology and War, while the production has a very raw and primitive sound while you can still hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording.
In my opinion Black Forest where a very great sounding hybrid of primitive black metal and crust and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Crimson Trails' "Wrath" and "Herne The Hunter". RECOMMENDED BUY.
