Xothist are a 1 man band from Grand Junction, Colorado that has been featured before in this zine and plays an ambient form of black metal and this is a review of his 2014 album "Simulacrum" which was released by Fallen Empire Records.
Dark ambient drones start off the album and after a couple of minutes the music goes into more of a fast black metal direction along with some blast beats and high pitched screams and after awhile the music starts using a mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as adding guitar leads into certain sections of the recording.
Some of the black metal guitar riffing has a harsh noise feeling to them at times before going more into an ambient noise direction for a few minutes until the album returns back to its black metal roots as well as adding more rawness into the music while the recording also goes back to ambient at times to create a very diverse sound and closer to the end of the album a small amount of clean playing is added into the music and also gives the recording more of an avant garde and experimental feeling.
Xothist remains true to his mixture of raw black metal and dark ambient as well as adding in a great amount of originality and creativity to create a very diverse, dark and evil record, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover astral projections and negative energies.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Xothist and if you are a fan of raw black metal or dark ambient, you should check out this album. 8 out of 10.
