Blackhammer are a band from Italy that plays a very raw form of occult black metal and this is a review of their 2015 ep DCLXVI: Occultum Surget" which was reelased by Dod Incarnate Records.
A very dark and distorted sound starts off the ep along with some grim black metal screams and you can also hear a touch of doom metal in their musical style and when guitars leads are utilized they are very primitive yet dark and melodic sounding and on the second track the music starts to go back into a fast and raw direction.
Blast beats can be heard in the faster sections of the bands musical style and the vocals can also get very deep at times while also retaining a grim atmosphere to the way they are approached and when the music is in a fast direction the early 90's influence of black metal can be heard in the songs and a couple of the tracks also bring in a brief use of keyboards which also gives the song an avant garde feeling while the main focus remains more on a raw style of black metal and some of the tracks also bring in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Blackhammer show a different style on this recording shedding the doom and death metal influences and creating a very raw and lo-fi style of black metal with the 6 songs they bring onto the recording, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Occultism and Left hand Path themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Blackhammer and if you are a fan of raw and lo-fi black metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Dark Sorrow" and "Sententia Mortis". 8 out of 10.
