Schrat are a band from Germany that plays a very raw and old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2018 album "Alptraumganger" which will be released in April by Folter Records.
A very dark and atmospheric sounding intro starts off the album along with some evil sounding laughter before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the vocals are mostly grim black metal screams.
A small amount of dark sounding melodies can also be heard in the riffing while the music is very heavily rooted in the mid 90's style along with the songs also bringing in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them.
Spoken word parts and clean vocals can also be heard briefly and as the album progresses melodic guitar leads are added onto one of the tracks while they also bring in a couple of instrumentals which also bring in elements of classical music before returning back to a heavier direction and a couple of the tracks are long and epic in length.
Schrat plays a style of black metal that is very raw and traditional sounding in the 90's style, the production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics are written in German and cover pest, suffering and death themes.
In my opinion Schrat are a very great sounding raw, old school and traditional black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Alptraumganger" "Graberland" and "Eruption". 8/5 out of 10.
