This is a review of a split ep between new York's Ordeals and France's Daethorn which will be released as a joint effort between Blood Harvest Records and Helter Skelter Productions and we will start off the review with Ordeals a band that plays a mixture of black, doom, and death metal.
Their side of the split starts out with spoken word samples before going into more of a heavier direction along with a decent amount of melodic riffing while death metal growls are also used at times as well as some black metal screams and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them along with the slower sections of the music bringing in elements of doom metal and they also bring in a cover of Aethorn's "Deadly Slumber" before closing with an instrumental.
Ordeals plays a musical style that takes black, doom and death metal and mixes them together to create a sound of their own, the production sounds very old school while the lyrics cover death, rebirth and ordeal themes.
In my opinion Ordeals are a very great sounding mixture of black, doom and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Night OF The Ghoul".
Next up is Daethorn a solo project that plays a very raw form of black metal.
His side of the split starts out with a very fast and raw sound which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the vocals are mostly angry yet high pitched black metal screams along with a few growls which also adds in a touch of death metal at times.
Throughout his side of the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the music also brings in a great amount of 90's influences but done in a more modern fashion as well as the guitar leads being done in a very raw and melodic style and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
Daethorn plays a style of black metal that is very raw and chaotic sounding, the production sounds powerful enough to give an old school style a more up to date sound while the lyrics cover dark themes.
In my opinion Daethorn are a very great sounding raw black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musicla genre, you should check out his side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Beyond The Shroud".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and if you are a fan of the many different styles of black metal, you should check out this cassette. 8 out of 10.
