Ozark Shaman are a solo project from Missouri that plays a very raw, atmospheric and folk influenced form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2026 album "A Traitor Is Worse Then An Enemy".
Atmospheric sounding synths start off the album and also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling.
All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style. Vocals are mostly angry sounding black metal screams along with the songs also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Viola and banjo's which add in elements of folk music are also added into certain sections of the album as well as some screams also adding in a small amount of clear singing and a later track also adds in a brief use of death metal growls, some of the riffing also shows an influence of thrash metal along with the closing track also being an instrumental. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover spirituality, cosmicism, war, history and inner struggle themes.
In my opinion Ozark Shaman is a very great sounding raw, atmospheric folk influenced black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Warriors Spirit" "Bayous Of Black" and "Wicked Ways". 8 out of 10.
