Aureole/Alunarian Bellmaster/Lupus Lounge/2024 Full Length Review

Aureole  are  a  solo  project  from  Portland,  Oregon  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  ambient  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "Alunarian  Bellmaster"  which  will b e  released  in  February  by  Lupus  Lounge.

Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  ambient  style  synths  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  At  times  the  music  also  captures  a  very  lo-fi  atmosphere  along  with  some  programmed  beats  also  being  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction  and  the  closing  track  is  an  ambient  instrumental.

On  this  recording  Aureole  takes  ambient  and  atmospheric  black  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  diverse  recording  as  well  as  keeping  everything  slow  and  minimalistic.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  and  covers  grimdark  fantasy  and  science  fiction  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Aureole  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Alunarian  Ghosts  Of  Bellmaster"  "Orbiting  Around  Alunarian  Ruins"  and  "Alunarian  Surrender".  8  out  of  10.

Aureole/Alunar/Fallen Empire Records/2014 Full length Review

Aureole  are  a  1  man  band  from  Portland,  Oregon  that  plays  a  very  ambient  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Alunar"  which  was  released  by  Fallen  Empire  Records.

Bells  and  a  very  atmospheric,  dark  ambient  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  epic  sounding  synths  before  going  into  a  very  slow,  raw  and  melodic  atmospheric  black  metal  direction  while  also  keeping  around  the  synths  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  start  to  creep  their  way  into  the  music  silently.

When  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  bring  in  a  more  modern  and  melodic  approach  to  black  metal  and  the  ambient  elements  are  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  parts  throughout  the  recording  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  there  are  also  a  couple  of  instrumentals  present  on  the  recording.

Most  of  the  music  sticks  to  more  of  a  slow  to  mid  paced  black  metal  and  one  of  the  later  songs  is  a  pure  ambient  piece  where  the  synths  start  evoking  more  of  an  avant  garde  presence  and  the  later  tracks  while  they  still  use  a  little bit  of  vocals  the  main  focus  is  more  on  creating an  ambient  black  metal  style.

Aureole  creates  a  style  of  black  metal  that  focuses  more  an  the  ambient  side  while  also  keeping  the  atmospheric,  raw  and  melodic  qualities  of  the  genre  to  create  a  recording  that  is  very  dark  and  epic  sounding,  the  production  has  a  very  dark  and  raw  sound  while  the  lyrics  cover  space,  cosmos,  medieval  and  solitude.

In  my  opinion  Aureole  are  a  very  great  sounding  ambient,  atmospheric  black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album. RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Citadel  Alunar"  and  "Crusade  of  NGC  5128".  8  out  of  10.
