Helleborus/Saprophytic Divinations/Redefining Darkness records/2019 CD Review

Helleborus  are  a  band  from  Manitou  Springs,  Colorado  that  has  had  on  album  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  occult  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Saprophytic  Divinations"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Redefining  Darkness  Records.

Acoustic  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  album  while  synths  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  while  also  mixing  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Growls  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Acoustic  guitars  also  make  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  along  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length,  when  spoken  word  samples  are  used  briefly  they  give  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  and  the  music  also  adds  in  a  decent  amount  of  90's  influences.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  occult  herbalism  and  sexual  mysticism  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Helleborus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Celestial  Grave"  "Devils  Garden"  "Seasonal  Legacy"  and  "Saprophytic  Divinations".  8/5  out  of  10.

Helleborus/The Carnal Sabbath/Satanath Records/Black Plague Records/2016 CD Review

Helleborus  are  a  duo  from  Colorado  Springs,  Colorado  that  plays  a  psychedelic  form  of  black  metal  and this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "The  Carnal  Sabbath"  which  will  be  released  in  June  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  Records  and  Black  Plague  Records.

A  very  dark,  and  avant  garde  ritualistic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some psychedelic  elements  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  and  atmospheric  sound  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  speeds  up.

A  more  raw  side  of  black  metal  can  be  heard  in  the  faster  riffing  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  very  dark  and  melodic  and  they  also demonstrate  a  great  amount  of  talent  and  skill  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  elements  of  traditional  metal  can  be  heard  in some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  most  of  the  music  is in  a  more  modern  atmospheric  black  metal  direction and  a  later  song  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of clean  playing  and  the  songs  also bring  in  a  great  amount  of  diversity  and  all  of the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful sound  to  them.

Helleborus  plays  a  very  diverse  form  of  black  metal  that  can  be  very  heavy,  melodic  and  atmospheric  at  times  while  the  psychedelic  elements  make  the  songs  stand  out  a  bit  more  and  gives  the  music  more  of  an original  style,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Left  hand  path  themes  with  a  touch  of  Lovecraftian  horror.

In  my  opinion  Helleborus  are  a  very  great  sounding  psychedelic  black  metal  band  and  if you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Coils"  "Draconian  Discipline'  "Temple  Of  Seventh  Death"  and  "The  Carnal  Sabbath".  8/5  out  of  10.
