Grievance/Lúgubres Devaneios De Abismos E Sombras/Haloran Records/;2026 Full Length Review

Portugal's  Grievance  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  raw,  atmospheric  and  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "Lúgubres Devaneios  De  Abismos  E  Sombras"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Haloran  Records.

Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction  while  synths  are  also  utilized  briefly.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in t he  old  school  era  of  the  genre.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  along  with  some  spoken  words  also  being  utilized  briefly.

Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  album  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Portuguese  and  cover  folklore  and  empirical  experience  with  oneiric  visions.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grievance  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  raw  and  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Floresta  Crepuscular"  "Em  Besta  me  Transformo"  and  "No  Fundo  do  Desfiladeiro".  8  out  of  10.

Portugal's  solo  project  Grievance  has  returned  with  a  collection  of  material  he  has  recorded  in  the  last  3  decades  which  also  shows  the  music  going  for  a  raw  and  old  school  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  compilation  album  "Antologia  19997-2024"  which  will  be  released  on  May  7th  by  Haloren  Records.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  compilation  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  angry  shouts  also  being  utilized  at  times.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in a  mixture  of  modern  and  old  school  touches.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  compilation  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style.

Synths  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.  a  couple  of   songs  are  instrumentals  as  well  as  one  of  them  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  folk  instruments,  some  of  the  earlier  recordings  also  capture  a  very  lo-fi  atmosphere  and  growls,  clean  playing and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Portuguese  and  cover  Occultism,  Folklore,  Philosophy  and  Struggle  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Grievance  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rito  De  Passagem"  "Lust  For  Battle"  and  "Eterna  Noites  de  Inverno".  8  out  of  10.

This  is  a  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Portugal's  Thy  Black  Blood  and  Grievance  called  "Unspeakable  Acts  &  Occult  Encryptions"  which  was  released  by  War  Productions  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Thy  Black  Blood  a  band  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw  and  evil  form  of  black  metal.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  rain  and  thunder  sounds  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  sound  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  A  couple  of  their  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

The  music  also  ads  in  a  great  amount  of  old  school   influences  as  well  as  remaining  modern  at  the  same  time  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  A  couple  of  tracks  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  adding  in  more  of  a  darker  style,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  spoken  word  samples  are  also  added  on  the  closing  song.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  and  the  lyrics  cover  death,  destruction  and  evil  themes.

Next  up  is  Grievance  who  return  with  their  raw  and  old  school  style  of   occult black  metal.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  dark  soundscapes  and  acoustic  guitars  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also add  in  a  lot  of  melody.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them. Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a lot  of  90's  influences  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  remaining  very  true  to  an  old  school  style.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Philosophy  themes.

Grievance/The New Millennium Sessions/2007 Demo Review

This  is  a  review  of  another  demo  from  Grievance  with  the  music  being a  raw  and  primitive form  of   black metal  with  the  recording  being  self  released  in  2007  and  called  "The  new  Millennium  Sessions".

"The  Rotten  Empire"  begins  with  some  experimental  sounds  and  a  few  seconds  later  the  primitive  black  metal  guitar  riffs,  bass  and  drums  start  kicking  in  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  deeper  black  metal  vocals  and  a  few  seconds  later  blast  beats  start  coming  in  and  out  of  the  song  before  going  into  a  slower  direction  and towards  the  end  the  vocals  get  a  little  bit  more  grim  and  higher  pitched  and  the  song  closes  with  another  blast  beat.

"Lust  For  Battle"  begins  with  some  drums  and  fast  and  primitive  guitar  riffs  and  after  awhile  the  bass  guitars  start  kicking  in  and  the  song  goes  into  a  more  mid  paced  and  slower  direction  while  also  adding  the  fast  parts  back in  certain sections  of  the  song.

Song  lyrics  are  written  in  their  native  tongue  and  cover  history  and  cultural  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present on  this  recording.

In my  opinion this  is  another  great  sounding  demo from  Grievance  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal, you  should  check out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Rotten  Empire".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
