Ashbringer/We Came Here To Grieve/Tanslation Loss Records/2023 Full Length Review

Minnesota's Ashbringer has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of an experimental and atmospheric form of post black metal with elements of ambient, noise and folk music and this is a review of their 2023 album "We Came Here To Grieve" which will b e released on September 29th by Translation Loss Records.

Heavy riffing and angry sounding black metal screams start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Growls can also be heard at times along with the clean sections also bringing in elements of post rock  and  recording also has its experimental moments .

The songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts   while  clear vocals can also be heard in certain sections of the recording along with the music also going into an atmospheric direction at times and some of the tracks are also long and epic in length,  the music also adds in a lot of progressive touches.

The solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style when they are utilized  along  with  some  melodies also  being added into some of the guitar riffing  as  well  as  the  synths  also  bringing  in  elements  of  ambient  when  they  are  introduced  into  the  music,  spoken  word  samples  and  noises  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  acoustic  guitars  also  show  an  influence  of  folk  music.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  decent  sounding  recording  from  Ashbringer  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental  and  atmospheric  post  black  emtal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  'Pages"  "Gazed"  "Here"  and  "We  Came  Here  To  Grieve".  7/5  out  of  10.

Ashbringer/Yugen/Avantgarde Music/2016 CD Review

Ashbringer are  a  band  from  Minnesota  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Yugen"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Avantgarde  Music.

Atmospheric  synths  start  off  the  album  bringing  in  an  ambient  feeling  and  a  few  seconds  later  melodic  guitar  leads  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  after  a  minute  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  direction  along  with  some  tremolo  picking  and  after  awhile  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  are  added  into  the  music.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  they  also  mix  the  synths in  with  the  heavier  parts  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  while  also  adding  in  post  rock  elements and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  melodic  singing  and  they  also  bring  in  some  clean  playing  and  female vocals  which  also  bring  in  touches  of  post rock  and  darkwave  while  one  track  brings  in  oboe's  on  a  short  instrumental  before  closing  with  a  heavier  song.

Ashbringer  creates  another  black  metal  recording that  is  very  atmospheric  and  diverse  while  also  mixing  in  some  progressive  and  post  rock  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  nature,  and  metaphysical  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ashbringer  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Oceans  Apart"  "Celestial  Infancy"  and  "Glowing  Embers,  Dying  Fire".  8  out  of  10.

Ashbringer/Vacant/Avantgarde Music/2015 CD Review

Ashbringer  are  a  solo  project  from  Minnesota  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Vacant"  which  was  released  by  Avantgarde  Music.

Ambient  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  singing  which  also  appears  on  other  songs  as  well  and  acoustic  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  while  a  few  seconds  later  melodic  post  black  metal  guitar  leads a re  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  grim  yet  high  pitched  screams  and  after  the  intro  the  bass  guitars  start  having  more  of  a  powerful  sound  to  them.

A  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  elements  of  folk  music  at  times  and  the  music  can  get  very  atmospheric  when  synths  are  utilized  and  you  can  hear  a  lot  of  cascadian  black  metal  elements  throughout  the  recording  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  have  a  very  raw  feeling  to  them  and  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  there  is  also  an  ambient  instrumental  before  the   album  closes  with  another  heavy  track.

Ashbringer  plays  a  style  of  black  metal t hat  is  very  modern,  melodic,  raw  and  atmospheric  sounding  and  also  seems  to  be  very  heavily  influenced  by  the  cascadian  style  and  there  is  also  a  touch  of  ambient,  folk  and  progressive  in  the  songs,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

In  my  opinion  Ashbringer  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Lucid"  and  "better".  8  out  of  10.
